Information Services Librarian Hilton M. Briggs Library, South Dakota State University The H.M. Briggs Library welcomes applications for a 12-month faculty position at the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor, dependent upon qualifications. ________________________________________________________________________ ______ Responsibilities: Assist, advise, and instruct users in accessing information. This includes providing information inquiry services during scheduled information desk hours and through consultations in the information services office or elsewhere. Traditional and electronic reference resources must be used to respond to information requests made in person, via instant messaging, e-mail, telephone and other methods. In addition to providing quick-reference information and instructing clients in the use of library resources, all information services librarians may need to undertake in-depth research and conduct database searches for SDSU students and employees, including those at remote locations. Information services librarians are scheduled at the information desk, including some evening and weekend duty, within workload guidelines established by the Head of Public Services. Provide leadership in promoting Briggs Library services and materials to the university community. This requires working closely with public services librarians and other library staff members to ensure promotional efforts address library goals, objectives, and priorities. The following responsibilities are included: -Regularly utilizes electronic and print media to promote the library's electronic resources, collections, and services; Emphasizes the importance of promotion of library resources and services to other library staff, and assists them in promotional efforts; -Creates specialized web pages that emphasize the library's relevance in national or international issues; -Serves as a member of the library's publicity committee. Provide group instruction in information literacy through classroom presentations and library tours. This includes developing and updating library guides, Web pages, and other informational materials. The librarian in this position works cooperatively with other information services librarians to meet the library's instructional goals and teaches a percentage of the Library's instruction sessions. Some travel is required to provide instruction to SDSU students and employees at remote sites. Fulfill book selection and faculty liaison responsibilities for selected disciplines or departments. This includes developing and maintaining discipline-specific web research guides. Fulfill faculty expectations for librarianship, scholarly activity, and service as required for promotion and tenure. ________________________________________________________________________ ______ Qualifications: Required: -An earned ALA accredited master's degree in Library Science; -Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with students, faculty, and staff; -Evidence of a strong public services orientation; -Evidence of the ability to teach effectively in the library's instruction program; -Evidence of the ability to work independently and as part of a team; -Evidence of the ability to provide information inquiry services in a broad range of subject areas; -Work experience or graduate coursework pertaining to digital library resources; -Graduate coursework dealing with advanced reference topics. Desired: -An earned subject master's degree in addition to the MLS (required for tenure track appointment); -Reference or other work experience in an academic or research library; -Demonstrated working knowledge of, or experience with, instructional and/or presentation software; -Work experience or demonstrated interest in producing promotional materials and events; -Demonstrated working knowledge of, or experience with, design, implementation, and maintenance of web pages; -Library instruction experience, teaching experience, or coursework dealing with instructional techniques; -Academic, public, or special library work experience; -Working knowledge of one or more modern foreign languages. ________________________________________________________________________ ______ Salary: Commensurate with qualifications. ________________________________________________________________________ ______ University/Community: SDSU is a land grant institution and the state's largest institution of higher education with an enrollment of approximately 11,000 students. The library staff consists of 13 professionals and 19 support staff, plus numerous student assistants.
