TITLE: Undergraduate Instruction Coordinator

THE LIBRARIES:
Among the largest
academic research libraries in North America, the University of Washington
Libraries has a collection of more than seven million cataloged volumes, an
equal number in microform format, more than 50,000 serial titles, and several
million items in other formats. Students and faculty recognize the value
provided by the Libraries and rank the Libraries as the most important source of
information for their work. The Libraries also receives the highest satisfaction
rating of any academic service on the surveys of graduating seniors conducted by
the Office of Educational Assessment.
ODEGAARD UNDERGRADUATE LIBRARY:
Odegaard is an undergraduate library of
strong community and collaboration, working together to create a unique and rich
learning environment. With a collection of over 165,000 volumes, course reserves
and media collections, 500 computers and multiple technology suites, it is the
busiest library on campus with 24-hour service and an average daily entrance of
over 9,000 users.
THE POSITION:
OUGL seeks a creative and energetic librarian to promote
services to undergraduate students at the University of Washington through
innovative programs of instruction, reference, and research. The
successful candidate must have a strong commitment to working with undergraduate
students and bring leadership and creativity to teaching information literacy
and research skills throughout the University Libraries. Under the general
direction of the Director, Odegaard Undergraduate Library, this position
coordinates user education and information literacy instruction for OUGL, and
serves as the chair of the Instruction and Information Literacy Working Group.
The Undergraduate Instruction Coordinator also provides reference (in person and
virtually) in OUGL and may also participate in collection development and the
faculty liaison program of the University Libraries.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
* Provides general reference
service, including instruction and orientation for undergraduates, and
coordination for visits and orientations to OUGL from off-campus and community
groups. Reference and Information Desk schedule may include evenings and
weekend assignments, in addition to assigned hours for providing virtual
reference.
* Coordinates the OUGL user education program, working with
faculty in team-teaching information literacy sessions, conducting library
orientations, and providing workshops for students and faculty, and
librarians.
* Chairs the Instruction and Information Literacy Working Group
and leads an interdisciplinary team of instruction librarians to cultivate the
practice and scholarship of discipline-based teaching and curriculum
design. The working group will seek ways to provide training and support
for librarians to enhance their skills in working with students and with faculty
to improve the undergraduate academic experience, both inside the classroom and
beyond. The chair of the Instruction and Information Literacy Working
Group also serves on the strategic initiative Vision 2010 Undergraduate
Initiative Task Force.
* Works with the team of Odegaard staff and other
libraries to promote, publicize, and implement events and services to
undergraduates such as orientation programs, Freshman Seminars, UW Common Book,
Library Research Award for Undergraduates, the Research Exposed Lecture Series,
the Library Student Advisory Committee, and the Odegaard Writing and Research
Center.
* With the OUGL Coordinator for Reference Services,
supervises, trains, and evaluates graduate staff assistants who participate in
the instructional program which may include scheduling and teaching.

Participates in the selection and assessment of materials for the OUGL
collection through the Coordinated Collection Development Program, working with
the OUGL Coordinator for Collections.
* Participates in formal and informal
policy discussions for OUGL; provides specific contributions in assigned areas
of responsibility.
* Assumes other responsibilities as assigned; performs
other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
* Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American
Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information
studies degree.
* Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of
the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.
* Experience
working in an academic library or equivalent work experience in a library
instruction position.
* Extensive knowledge of current issues of library
instruction and pedagogy, and demonstrated skill in leading others in meeting
the challenges of providing reference and instructional services at large,
decentralized institutions.
* Demonstrated interest in the provision of
reference and information services in an academic setting required. Strong
public service orientation and demonstrated interest in working with
undergraduates.
* Ability to work successfully in a management team
environment where consultation, collaboration, and cooperation are
essential. Must be creative, energetic, innovative, and motivated to
continually seek improvement in services, collections, facilities.

Excellent and effective oral and written communication, interpersonal, and
organizational skills.
* Ability to represent the Libraries on campus,
regionally and nationally.
Preferred:
* One to three years post MLS experience in library
instruction and discipline-based curriculum design.
SALARY: $46,000 minimum. Starting salary commensurate with
qualifications and background.
BENEFITS: Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the
University of Washington Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF, The Vanguard Group, and/or
Fidelity Investments) on a matching basis. Vacation is accrued at the rate
of 24 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per
year. No state or local income tax.
