Performs
responsible professional library work in one or more specialized library fields
including, but not limited to: reference, children services, teen services,
adult services and community information. The Librarian I Generalist is
responsible for providing exceptional quality service to patrons as well as
training and guidance to paraprofessional and support staff including the use
of basic electronic databases and reference tools. Work may be performed in
public and non-public areas; hours of work are dependent upon the service hours
of the branch/department. Incumbents are required to work a flexible schedule,
which includes evenings, Saturdays and Sundays in support of public service
hours.

RECEIVED
Work
is performed under the supervision of a Librarian assigned to a higher class.
The Librarian I Generalist has considerable professional freedom to make
decisions regarding their assigned area.
SUPERVISION
EXERCISED
May
provide supervision to Pages, Librarian Assistants, part time Librarian I. The
supervision includes setting work schedules, participating in employment decisions,
setting goals, training and evaluating employees. Ensures proper use of library
facilities and materials by library patrons.
GUIDELINES
LPL
policy and regulations, professional library procedures, practices and
standards, applicable legislation applying to library operations and material
access, and site directives at specific libraries.
CONTACTS
LPL
staff, employees and supervisors, library patrons, professional organizations
and associates, library partners and community agencies and groups.
ESSENTIAL
FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS
Note:
This job description reflects Lexington Public Librarys assignment of essential

Proactively
provides information, reference and readers advisory services to patrons of all
ages and from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds.
Interprets
and explains LPL policies, procedures and resources to patrons and staff.
Assists
patrons in locating, selecting and using materials, instructs patrons in the
use of library resources including the on-line catalog and databases and makes
appropriate referrals to outside organizations and agencies.
Performs
collection development and maintenance of collection based on knowledge of
community needs, usage levels, and relevance of materials. Adheres to LPL
Materials Selection Policy.
Plans,
implements and evaluates programs. Depending upon the area of specialty,
programming may be geared toward children, teens, adults or seniors.
Gives
book talks, speaks before community organizations, leads tours of the library
and interacts with community groups by presenting programs and participating in
joint activities.
Creates
bibliographies, displays and other promotional activities to merchandise
library materials and services.
Participates
and represents LPL at regional, state and national professional conferences.
Maintains
an awareness of trends and developments within the profession.
Assumes
responsibility for the operation of the branch/department in the absence of the
senior manager.
Serves
on library committees and assists with internal projects as needed. The
Librarian I Generalist should attend all meetings and committees relating to
their area of specialty.
Performs
other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Public
service experience in children?s, teen and adult services.
Knowledge
of current practices and procedures of professional library work.
Ability
to recognize problems and assess situations, to recall and/or gather relevant
information and take appropriate action.
Skill
in working effectively as part of a group, as well as working independently
with little direction.
Ability
to adapt to changing situations, policies and procedures.
Ability
to plan and supervise the work of others, either library employees or
volunteers.
Ability
to communicate clearly, accurately, concisely and effectively.
Strong
interpersonal skills to deal with other staff, the public and community
partners.
Knowledge
of on-line data searching, reference resources, reader interest levels, books
and authors.
Contribute
to the goals of the library by promoting public awareness of library services,
and, when necessary, the policy and procedures of the library.
MINIMUM
EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Possession
of a masters degree in library science (MLS) from an
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REQUIRMENTS
Professional
certificate issued by the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives.
Bi-lingual
English/Spanish
PHYSICAL
ATTRIBUTES
Sufficient
mobility and dexterity to secure books and other library materials.
Manual
dexterity and physical ability to perform tasks. (i.e. repeated lifting,
continual standing, reaching, bending and walking)
Occasional
travel by automobile is required for position responsibilities and/or training.

Salary
Exempt
Level Position: Annual salary range $33,355.31- $52,701.39
Primary Work Schedule
Monday,
Thursday 1pm-9pm, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 9am-5pm 1 weekend in 4: Saturday
9am-5pm, Sunday 12:30pm-5pm Must be willing to fill in schedule gaps
occasinally.
