Children's Librarian I, FT - Northside Branch

Job Responsibilities

Performs responsible professional library work involving the full application of professional library techniques and procedures in one or more specialized library fields including, but not limited to reference, children, cataloger, adult materials, and community information. The Librarian I is responsible for providing quality library public service to patrons. Work may be performed in public and non-public areas; hours of work are dependent upon the service hours of the particular unit. Incumbents are required to work a flexible schedule, which includes evenings, Saturdays and Sundays in support of public service hours.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Work is performed under the general supervision of a Librarian assigned to a higher class. The Librarian I classification has considerable professional freedom to make decisions regarding their assigned area.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Assists supervision to Pages, Librarian Assistants, Library Associates, and Computer Aides. The supervision includes work schedules, assists with employment decisions, and employee evaluations.

Ensures proper use of computers by Internet users.

GUIDELINES

LPL rules and regulations, professional library procedures, practices and standards, applicable legislation applying to library operations and material access, and site directives at specific libraries.

CONTACTS

LPL staff, employees and supervisors, Library users, vendors, professional organizations and associates, and community groups.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS

Note: This job description reflects Lexington Public Librarys assignment of essential functions for this particular job; it does not prescribe or restrict the tasks that may be assigned at a later date or as may be needed.

Answers reference questions and performs reader advisory services requiring a broad general knowledge of a main, branch, or department collection; assists customers in the selection and location of books and other library materials; explains LPL policy and procedures to patrons.

Provides input for the ordering of books and various library materials, and supervises the checking of books and other library materials as received.

Compiles bibliographies on various subjects; oversees and participates in circulation activities; compiles daily and monthly statistical reports.

Assists the public in the selection of audio-visual materials and use of equipment, personal computers, and various Library research equipment.

Participates in materials selection; compiles and produces book lists; participates in developing and weeding collections, and in transferring materials to other Library units.

Plans, prepares, and presents children programs; selects program materials; sets up displays; and presents programs to appropriate library patrons.

Assists with outreach activities and takes programs into community, schools and daycare facilities.

Conducts Library tours occasionally.

Maintains an awareness of developments in the profession.

Performs related duties as required, or assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Thorough knowledge of professional library principles, methods, materials and practices, especially as they relate to the field of specialization in which work is performed and as they pertain to the cultural and ethnic traditions of target populations.

Thorough professional knowledge of reader interest levels, books and authors, periodicals, pamphlet materials, and library guides and publications of interest to the customer base.

Administrative ability and ability to supervise, train, evaluate and discipline paraprofessional staff.

Ability to develop and implement successful childrens programming

Ability to effectively promote community interest in the neighborhood-center branch and its services.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, library customers, and various external clients.

Ability to work with the public for extended periods of time, maintaining a positive, pleasant demeanor and providing friendly, courteous services to library patrons.

Ability to work without sitting for a minimum of two hours, and during that time is able to move with reasonable speed to locations throughout the work place in order to accomplish public service duties.

Ability to operate a computer efficiently, with proficiency in MS Office software (i.e. Word, Outlook, Excel, Publisher.)

Ability to support and motivate staff in providing a positive library experience for all customers.

Ability to develop and maintain an inviting library environment for persons who have not traditionally used public libraries.

Ability to work directly with non-traditional or new library customers to ensure that they understand both their privileges and responsibilities.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Possession of a masters degree in library science (MLS) from an ALA accredited program and some responsible experience in professional library work, including some supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Will consider applicants who are in their final semester of their masters in library science program from an accredited institution.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Professional certificate issued by the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives.

Bi-lingual English/Spanish.

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES

Ability to sit and operate a computer for extended periods.

Sufficient mobility and dexterity to secure books and other library materials.

Ability to perform essential functions which require bending, standing, stooping, and lifting moderately heavy boxes of books 20-50 pounds, and standing for long periods.

Work is often performed in and around books, shelves, and computers requiring adherence to industry safety procedures and guidelines.

Salary

Exempt Level Position: Annual salary range $33,355.31- $52,701.39

Primary Work Schedule

Monday, Thursday, Friday 9am-5pm, Tuesday, Wednesday 1pm-9pm 1 weekend in 4: Saturday 9am-5pm, Sunday 12:30pm-5pm Must be willing to help fill in schedule gaps occasionally.
