The Columbus Dispatch Library has a full-time opening for an Information Specialist.  We are seeking a detail-oriented and innovative individual whose responsibilities will include developing tools for news research efforts, Web site, wiki and database development and training and technical support for end-users.

 

We are a large metro daily (approximately 220,000 daily, 340,000 Sunday).  The Dispatch Printing Company also owns 22 suburban weeklies, radio, TV and cable news stations in the Columbus market, as well as two niche publications, Columbus Alive and Fronteras. 

 

We are a staff of 4 full-timers (all with MLS degrees).  We each perform nearly every duty, from archiving the daily paper to research to putting newspapers on the shelf. 

 

Qualifications:

 

Web design experience and knowledge of HTML is essential.  Experience importing or loading data from a variety of sources is required, as is an understanding of database and intranet design and development.  A knowledge of Web-based programming languages is desirable, as well as

a knowledge and/or interest in CARR techniques.  Experience with PHP, Cold Fusion and MySQL a plus.  Proficiency using online databases including Nexis, Accurint and public records sets to provide detailed research is required.  

 

A master's degree in library science is preferred, along with 2-3 years of reference or research experience, preferably in a news library.
