The Harvard University Library is seeking a visionary leader in the
field of digital library technology for the new position of Digital
Library Architect. The Digital Library Architect will provide leadership
in the architecture and design of large-scale, innovative library
systems for one of the greatest research libraries in the world. 

Overview
The library system at Harvard provides a wide range of services to
students, faculty and researchers at Harvard as well as throughout the
world. With a collection of more than 15.8 million volumes, a vast
collection of primary-source materials, a digital preservation
repository containing more than 7 million objects, and licensed access
to more than 8,000 electronic resources, the Harvard University Library
is the largest university library in the world. The Harvard University
Library is committed to maintaining its excellence in the digital era.
Over the past 10 years, Harvard has developed a technical infrastructure
that incorporates digital content into library collections and services.
Critical goals in the coming years include the evolution of a coherent
and usable resource discovery and delivery environment as well as the
long-term preservation of digital scholarly content. 

Duties and Responsibilities
The Digital Library Architect will play a key role in the design of
digital library infrastructure, systems and services. This is an
opportunity for someone with energy and vision to help guide one of the
major digital library programs in the country, and to work with a
knowledgeable, creative, and collegial team. The Digital Library
Architect will be expected to 

*	help articulate digital library issues within and outside the
University; 
*	monitor, interpret and guide the integration of developments in
Internet technologies; 
*	participate actively in the architecture and design of systems
and services to support the storage and preservation of digital
collections as well as resource discovery and access across all library
collections -- both digital and print; 
*	provide advice and consultation to units across the University;
and 
*	contribute to national developments in the field. 

Education and Job Requirements



*	Masters degree in computer science, information management,
science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education
and experience 
*	8+ years of relevant professional experience 
*	Demonstrated ability to thrive in a complex, collaborative
environment 
*	Deep knowledge of and interest in emerging trends in Internet
technology and standards in digital libraries 
*	Excellent interpersonal skills as demonstrated by the ability to
interact with others in a consistently positive manner, exercising
discretion and tact 
*	Excellent oral communication skills that demonstrate the ability
to effectively convey and explain information and tactfully deal with
diverse people, situations and ideas 
*	Excellent written communication skills that demonstrate the
ability to draft clear and concise specifications, documentation and
reports 
*	Strong analytical skills as demonstrated by the ability to draw
conclusions in a logical, systematic way 
*	Strong project management skills, including the ability to plan
assignments and monitor performance for collaborative projects that cut
across organizational boundaries 
*	Sophisticated understanding of how information is organized,
accessed, and used to support the academic and research missions of the
University 

Location: Cambridge, MA; Full Time: 9am-5pm; Grade 59
