Special Collections Cataloger - The UCSD Libraries
Mandeville Special Collections Library
Provides intellectual leadership for emerging issues in
metadata. Responsible for creation of metadata for MSCL digital objects,
in consultation with the Libraries’ Digital Library Program.
Participates in the creation and development of MSCL
priorities, policies, procedures, and goals, especially the development and
updating of cataloging and other technical services policies and
procedures.
Serves on appropriate library-wide, campus-wide, and/or
system-wide committees.
Participates in MSCL’s public services programs;
depending on subject expertise, may participate in the development of
exhibitions, and in the interpretation and promotion of MSCL holdings to the
campus, scholarly, and public communities, through oral presentation, written
papers, and digital initiatives.
May serve as acting department head, in the absence of the
director of MSCL.

Experience cataloging rare books, manuscripts, and
other special collections materials in an academic research library, using
AACR2, LCSH, LC classification, DCRB, DACS, and MARC 21 formats.
·
Experience directing the work of others.
·
Reading knowledge of at least one western European
language, preferably Spanish.
·
Knowledge of the special features of rare materials
sufficient to evaluate and describe a wide variety of notable characteristics
related to illustrations, bindings, genres, book production, and
provenance.
·
Demonstrated awareness of national and international
trends in bibliographic and authority control.
·
Familiarity with established and emerging metadata
standards.
·
Awareness of research methods to facilitate the
connection between information organization and information need.
·
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and
communication skills.
·
Ability to work cooperatively in a fast-paced
environment, identifying problems and offering creative solutions.
UCSD librarians are
expected to participate in library-wide and system-wide planning and
governance, and to be professionally active.
Desirable
Qualifications
·
Academic specialization/advanced
degree in history, literature. art history, history of science, or
anthropology.
·
Experience cataloging a broad range
of graphic, electronic, realia, serial, and other non-print materials.
Experience in research and writing using primary resources. Public service
experience in an academic research library.
