Now Recruiting!  Archival positions in Albany NY

 

The New York State Archives in partnership with Centro de Estudios Puertorriquenos at Hunter College is undertaking an innovative project to enhance access to records and images of New York’s Latino communities.  The project will create a bi-lingual website providing access to Latino-related holdings from the two partner institutions along with seven other government, academic, and community-based repositories in New York.  The site, aimed at scholarly and community historians as well as teachers and students, will include EAD finding aids, digital images, and educational resources.  The project is funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.  

 

Position Description:   Two part and full time Description Specialist (6-7 month position, project concludes Sept. 30, 2008),

The Description Specialists will perform tasks relating to arranging and describing collections and digitized documents from collections held by participating institutions:  Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños, Cornell University, New York City Department of Records and Information Services, Dominican Studies Institute, Hofstra University, Hostos Community College, Rochester Museum and Science Center, and Onondaga Historical Association.

 

Specific Tasks:

1.      Visit participating institutions to process (arranging and describing) collections;

2.      Create/refine container lists, historical background information, expanded content information and other components of a finding aid for project materials; and prepare for XML encoding

3.      Create or update MARC-catalog records for affiliate’s collections and create links among catalog records, finding aids, and images;

4.      Work with affiliate institutions to select images for scanning, prepare materials for shipment, and create metadata for digitized images;

5.      Assist with preparation of reports, dissemination of information, development of website, project guidelines, and best practice models.

 

Qualifications: 

1.      Bachelor’s degree in Latino studies, history, political science, American studies, or related concentrations (degree in Latino Studies preferred)

2.      Prefer Master’s degree in history, government, business or public administration, political science, American studies, library science, information science or archival administration;

3.      Prefer two years of archival experience in which the preponderance of duties involves acquiring, arranging, describing, and making available archival records;

4.      Prefer competence with written and spoken Spanish and English;

5.      Demonstrated writing and organizational skills;

6.      Prefer familiarity with MARC, EAD/XML encoding, and Dublin Core;

7.      Ability to travel to participating institutions utilizing public transportation and rental vehicles.

 

Salary and Benefits

 

Full and part-time hours are available. Positions are for 6-7 months concluding September 30, 2008. Salary commensurate with experience. Due to the short nature of the positions do not include health, dental, or vision benefits.
