First-year Experience Librarian

Library Instruction Services, University of Texas Libraries


The University of Texas Libraries seeks applications for the entry-level
position of First-year Experience Librarian.  The position will
collaborate with the recently formed School of Undergraduate Studies
(http://www.utexas.edu/ugs/) and the Library Instruction Services (LIS)
team to develop and implement research and information literacy skills
programming for the campus' new freshmen core curriculum.
Responsibilities include collaborating with faculty, teaching library
instruction sessions, creating tutorials, research guides and
assignments in print and online, including integrating content into
course management systems,  implementing  a "train the Teaching
Assistant" model for larger signature courses,  and assessing student
learning.   The position will also mentor graduate student interns into
lead teaching roles and participate in virtual and in-person reference
services.  The position reports to the Head Librarian, Library
Instruction Services (LIS).  Evening and weekend hours may be required.


 

LIS coordinates instruction services for the University of Texas
Libraries, and works closely with subject specialist librarians and
faculty to integrate information literacy and research skills into
campus teaching and learning (www.lib.utexas.edu/services/instruction).
LIS is a highly collaborative, team-oriented unit that takes an
innovative, service-oriented approach to helping the UT-Austin community
become information literate in a technology-rich environment.

 

Required Qualifications:  MLS from an ALA accredited graduate program,
or PhD in the humanities or social sciences or other relevant field
(will accept ABD).  Demonstrated interest in undergraduate learning.
Awareness of current issues in information literacy instruction.
Familiarity with emerging technologies as they relate to information
literacy.  Demonstration of a strong service orientation as well as
excellent written, verbal and presentation skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications:  Experience teaching library instruction
sessions. Experience creating library instruction materials such as
tutorials, research guides and assignments. Experience providing
reference service.  Experience collaborating with faculty. Experience
assessing student learning. Demonstrated potential for leadership in
university, state and national programs.  Successful candidates will
also display evidence of initiative, creative energy and resourcefulness
and a proven ability to work collaboratively and efficiently in a
fast-paced and evolving technological environment. 

 

Salary and Benefits:  $44,000 - $47,000 annually, depending on
qualifications and experience.   No state or local income tax.  Standard
state benefits package including annual vacation and sick leave, paid
holidays, retirement plans, and health insurance options (comprehensive
major medical, dental, vision, life, and disability).  Deferred
compensation and tax sheltered annuity programs also available.
