Position Description

Summary The Head of Instruction and Information Services is responsible for providing direction and planning for the liaison librarians, Distance Education librarian, and Emerging Web Technologies Librarian. The position is responsible for assuring high quality instruction programs and information/reference services, both in the physical building and through virtual assistance. The position manages liaison librarian activities, including the Library 100/101 instruction program, course-related instruction, and liaison relationships with academic departments. Develops and oversees information and library research services that meet student, faculty and staff needs.        

Accountabilities
        Directly supervises five reference/liaison librarians, Emerging Web Technologies Librarian, and the Distance Education Librarian. Evaluates staff on a regular basis. Closely consults with them in their areas of expertise.

Supervises and coordinates liaison librarian responsibilities with faculty, including communication with liaison departments, instruction programs, and collection development.

Oversees library instruction programs, including the design and administration of the Library 100/101 program, course-related instruction provided by liaison librarians, personal research appointments, and virtual methods of instruction, including online tutorials, videos, etc.

Observes and evaluates instruction sessions of liaison librarians and Distance Education librarian.
Establishes standards and policies to maintain high quality reference and information services.
Develops library research services that meet the needs of users, including walk-in service, instant messaging, e-mail, mobile services, website services, and online tutorials.

Works closely with the Emerging Web Technologies librarian to develop appropriate instructional technology tools for library instruction and to ensure appropriate information access on the library’s website.

Works closely with faculty to integrate information literacy concepts into the curriculum.
Provides direction in the development of the electronic reference collection.
Coordinates and promotes the use of digital resources, archives, and institutional repository services to liaison librarians and liaison faculty.

Works closely with the Customer Service supervisor to staff the desk with core customer service staff, reference staff and other library staff members.

Serves as liaison librarian for at least two departments in Arts and Sciences.
Develops and maintains various library web site pages. Creates web pages for assigned liaison areas.
Participates as an instructor for the Library 100/101 program and designated liaison areas.
Participates in reference service on a weekly basis, including weekend and evening rotations.
Provides leadership and works closely with the Head, Collection Development to assure that benchmarks and goals for collection development are met by the liaison librarians.

Collaborates with the Coordinator of Academic Technologies to plan services that support faculty pedagogical needs.
Stays abreast of current library technologies to utilize appropriate technology and programs to provide effective user services.

Participates in professional activities and service to library, university and community.

Knowledge       Knowledge of best practices for information literacy and user services/customer service in academic libraries.

Knowledge of library standards for public service.
Knowledge of materials, both print and electronic, for academic libraries.
Familiarity with the scholarly domain of the humanities, social sciences and sciences.

Skills and Competencies Excellent communication skills, oral and written.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently, as team leader or as team member.
Instructional Design experience or education (preferred)

Education      

Experience      5 years of reference and instruction experience. Previous supervisory experience required.
