Director University at Buffalo Teaching and Learning Center

Position Overview:
The University at Buffalo (UB), State University of New York (SUNY), invites
applications and nominations for the position of the Director for the
Teaching & Learning Center (TLC). The Teaching & Learning Center was
established in the fall of 2007 through a merger of two previously separate
entities with related missions, the Center for Teaching & Learning Resources
(CTLR) and the Educational Technology Center (ETC). The mission of UB's TLC
is to promote academic excellence by providing opportunities for faculty,
teaching assistants, and other members of the UB community to enhance their
effectiveness as teachers. The TLC pursues this mission by disseminating
knowledge through workshops, speakers, programs, discussion groups, and
consultations about the teaching and learning processes, skills and methods
to enhance teaching and learning, and how to effectively and innovatively
utilize the latest developments in information technology and media to
enrich course content and presentation and enhance students¹ educational and
learning experiences. The TLC will also support and disseminate scholarly
research about pedagogy, learning, and effective educational practices.

The University at Buffalo is a member of the prestigious Association of
American Universities (AAU) and is one of the nation¹s premier public
research universities. UB is the most comprehensive, research-intensive
university within the 64 campus SUNY system, and is its primary center for
professional education and training. UB currently enrolls over 27,000
students and offers over 300 degree programs at the baccalaureate, master¹s,

programs, services, and activities of the TLC, including leading a strategic
planning effort to most effectively align the TLC with the University¹s plan
for achieving enduring academic excellence, UB 2020. See

About the Buffalo/Niagara Region:
The University at Buffalo is an engaged citizen in and leading economic
development engine for its surrounding community and region. Buffalo, called
³The City of Good Neighbors,² is the second largest city in New York State.
Fortune magazine ranked the Western New York region in the top 20% of 60
areas in the nation for the quality of its public education, and one of the
city of Buffalo¹s public high schools has recently been ranked in the top 10
of all high schools in the nation.  In addition to its outstanding schools,
the Buffalo area is endowed with world-class architectural and cultural
treasures, including internationally-renowned Frank Lloyd Wright buildings
and major cultural institutions such as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and
the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and with a vibrant array of arts,
theater, music, and outstanding restaurants. For more than a decade, the
Town of Amherst, in which the University¹s North Campus is located, has
consistently been ranked among the top three ³safest cities in America,²
inclusive of all population-size categories. A 2006 analysis from the
National Association of Realtors found that Buffalo-area housing costs are
considerably lower than the U.S. average and suggested a good possibility of
better-than-average appreciation in the coming years, making Buffalo living
as affordable as it is appealing. The National Association of Home Builders¹
2006 Housing Opportunity Index ranks the Buffalo area as the most affordable
housing market in the Northeast. Commute times in Buffalo consistently rank
among the nation¹s shortest, with an abundance of cultural and recreational
activities nearby, contributing to another of Buffalo¹s nicknames, the
³twenty-minute city.² Situated on the banks of Lake Erie and within a
half-hour¹s drive of Lake Ontario, Buffalo is a true ³waterfront city.² Lake
Erie is responsible for far more than producing lake-effect snow; it is also
a major site of water recreation in the spring and summer and one of the
area¹s chief natural beauties year-round. With a pleasant, temperate climate
and the ³highest percentage of summer sunshine of any region in New York
State,² Buffalo¹s spring and summer months richly deserve the widespread
notoriety its winters have attracted. In addition, it is only a short drive
to enjoy outdoor beauty including Niagara Falls, Letchworth State Park, and
Allegany State Park and to visit the world-class city of Toronto. For
additional information about the community, see
