Duties And Responsibilities:  The Processing Archivist is one of a team
of archivist/librarians responsible for processing and original
description and cataloging of unique manuscripts, archival collections,
visual materials, and objects in the holdings of the Center for the
History of Medicine. This position collaborates in a collegial fashion
with other members of the Center to assist in the timely and effective
description of holdings and other activities that ensure their
accessibility, use, and preservation. The Archivist: develops processing
plan for collections as assigned; appraises, selects, arranges, and
describes unique archival materials in an EAD/XML finding aid; creates
MARC records for finished collections, working in ALEPH/ HOLLIS and
OCLC; assists in the accessioning and preprocessing of new acquisitions
of the Center. 

 

Required Education, Experience and Skills Basic qualifications: MLS from
an ALA-accredited academic program and/or MA with an archival
concentration required. Additional requirements: Two or more years
experience arranging and describing manuscript and archival materials
with demonstrated experience processing large collections and creating
EAD finding aids; familiarity in using MARC-AMC and APPM/DACS for
original cataloging of manuscript materials, authority files, and
microcomputer applications required. Broad knowledge of American, modern
European culture and history, history of medicine and science, and
supervisory experience highly desirable. Demonstrated ability to manage
workflow and multiple tasks, attention to detail and complex
problem-solving skills. Familiarity with audio/visual materials desired.
Flexibility, versatility and tolerance for change are essential in this
fast-paced work environment; ability to work independently as well as
collaborate in a team envir
 onment in a cooperative and collegial fashion. 

 

Additional Web Position Listing: Carries out other duties as assigned,
as necessitated by the needs of the Center and/or made possible by
incumbent's subject strengths or technical skills. Such duties may
include curating exhibits and assisting with reference and reproduction
requests.
