Head, Digital Services 

RESPONSIBILITIES: The University of Alabama seeks an enthusiastic,
dynamic professional with vision and strong technical and management
skills to fill the position of Head, Digital Services. Working closely
with the Curator of Special Collections and reporting to the Associate
Dean for Library Technology, the Head, Digital Services plays a major
role in coordinating, directing, strengthening, and expanding the
Libraries' digitization program.  

REQUIREMENTS:  Terminal degree in a relevant field. A minimum of two
years' hands-on experience working in a digital collections environment
involving at least two of the following: digital capture and
manipulation; metadata; digital asset management; and storage and
preservation of digital objects. Experience with Web site development
and working knowledge of markup languages. Demonstrated understanding of
all aspects of managing a digital services unit. Excellent
interpersonal, communication, organizational, and supervisory skills,
including the ability to work effectively with diverse groups both
within and outside the University community. Evidence of potential to
meet University requirements for promotion and tenure. Ability to meet
professional standards and competencies such as those set forth by the
Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience managing a digital production
operation. Program planning and grant writing and management experience.

ENVIRONMENT:  Major external funding guarantees an ongoing and
diversified digital program.  A fully-staffed Office of Library
Technology provides technology development, implementation, and
management in support of digital initiatives.  The University maintains
membership in the Association of Research Libraries, SPARC, the
Coalition for Networked Information, Association of Southeastern
Research Libraries (ASERL), the Center for Research Libraries, SOLINET,
and the Network of Alabama Academic Libraries. The Libraries use the
Voyager Integrated Library System and OCLC's CONTENTdm digital resources

SALARY/BENEFITS:  12-month tenure track appointment. Rank and salary
commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Strong benefits
