Pitts Theology Library invites applications for the position of Curator of Archives and Manuscripts. One of Emory University’s six instructional libraries, Pitts supports the programs of the Candler School of Theology and the university’s doctoral programs in religion. Its collections include over 540,000 volumes, and its staff of 20 supports vigorous programs in archives, special collections, and digital imaging. Planning for a new library building is underway, and construction is anticipated to begin in 2008. Further information about the Pitts Library can be found at www.pitts.emory.edu.

 Responsibilities: The Archivist’s principal duties include: cultivation of relations with collection donors and accessioning, arranging, describing, cataloging, and providing access to archival and manuscript collections. Responsibilities include: maintaining current records management schedules with donors; appraising and accessioning materials in a variety of formats; preparing inventories and other descriptive tools; preparing/maintaining finding aids and MARC format catalog records; collaborating with other library staff to provide reference service for special collections and archives; working with conservation unit to provide proper housing and preservation of materials;  and participating in professional activities. Planning, directing, and reviewing the work of one full-time general staff member and two student assistants is also involved. May also assist with selection of material and planning for Special Collections exhibitions. Special projects as assigned. The position works closely with other library staff, members of the university community, and researchers as needed, and reports to the Library Director.

 Qualifications: Requires graduate archival education acquired either through an ALA-accredited M.L.S. degree or other relevant graduate degree program, and experience in appraisal, accessioning, arrangement, and description of manuscript collections, or equivalent combination of education and experience; familiarity with the MARC format and related LC/archival cataloging standards, including DACS; familiarity with EAD and automated library information management systems; familiarity with archival collection management database software, such as Archivists’ Toolkit; knowledge of the conservation and preservation needs of archival collections; knowledge of issues related to archives and manuscript collections; ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing; excellent organizational skills, accuracy, attention to detail; ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment; supervisory skills; and demonstrated interest in professional activities. Subject expertise in religion or theology preferred.
