Hunter Library seeks an enthusiastic librarian with strong interest in emerging metadata schema to join its service-oriented staff.

The Metadata Librarian will play a major role in planning and implementing digital projects including exploring new technologies in metadata applications; metadata scheme adaptation; developing standards, policies and procedures; training library staff and partners to create and apply metadata; conducting project assessment; and project management. The metadata librarian will create metadata using both emerging and traditional metadata schema. The ideal candidate will work well with diverse stakeholders, be able to manage complex workflows and be capable of creating digital projects that have both immediate appeal and lasting significance. This position will report to the Head of Cataloging, but will work in close collaboration with other library units.

The Metadata librarian will be involved in ongoing projects such as the Crafts Revival project and encoding WCU Special Collections finding aids in EAD and will also be expected to provide leadership in the development of new digital projects. The metadata librarian will also have some responsibility for cataloging traditional library materials.

New library school graduates with relevant knowledge/experience are encouraged to apply for this position.

Qualifications: A Masters of Library Science from an ALA accredited school is required. Knowledge of one or more of the following metadata standards: Dublin Core, EAD, HTML, XML, MODS, etc. Knowledge of AACR2, MARC, LCSH and LC classification and OCLC. Knowledge of integrated library systems such as Innovative Interface’s Millennium system. Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively with project teams. Effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. An entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to seek out and implement new initiatives.

Preferred qualifications include experience with applying metadata standards to describe digital collections; experience with CONTENTdm; experience cataloging traditional library materials; experience with digital image and text creation (scanning); experience with archives and archival practice; experience with programming languages such as Perl and experience in an academic library environment.

Salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications. Minimum salary is $40,000. This is a twelve-month, tenure-track position with a generous 24 days of vacation leave annually. Choice of retirement plans includes Fidelity, Lincoln, TIAA-CREF, VALIC, or the North Carolina State retirement system.

Hunter Library shares an online catalog with two other university libraries that comprise the Western North Carolina Library Network.
