Library Affairs at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is seeking a Rare Book Librarian. This is a full-time, 12-month, continuing appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor available April 1, 2008, or later.

 

Responsibilities:  Under the general direction of the Director, SCRC, the Rare Book Librarian will select, describe, and provide access to all published materials held in the SCRC. Specific duties include: collection development, with responsibility to manage and expend funds (including endowed acquisition funds in areas of responsibility); facilitating bibliographic access to collections; and maintaining security of collections. Coordinates activities between SCRC and Preservation, Cataloging and Acquisitions units, Information Resources Management. Supervises the work of one or more student assistants. Provides general reference for the reading room as well as rare book-specific consultations. Performs other duties to enhance and promote the rare book collection and its utility for instruction and research. Evaluates and revises departmental policies and procedures as necessary. Develops grant proposals. Scholarly research and/or creative activity and external and internal service activity are also required as part of this position. Special projects and duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications:  ALA accredited Master’s of Library Science, with course work related to rare books. Knowledge of bibliographic description and control as applied to rare book and special collections including knowledge of the history of books and of printing. Success in conducting instruction sessions and/or other forms of teaching. Ability to organize work and to work well under pressure. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written) including ability to work effectively and cooperatively with staff, colleagues and researchers. For appointment at the Assistant Professor rank: Interest and potential to meet established Library Affairs criteria for promotion and tenure, including professional service and published research. For appointment at the Associate Professor rank: A sustained record of peer-reviewed research and publications including a record of professional service at state, regional, or national levels. Minimum of three years professional experience in rare book collecting and librarianship.

 

Preferred Qualifications:  For appointment at the Associate Professor rank: minimum five years professional experience in rare book collecting and librarianship. Experience with collection development and working with vendors, dealers, collectors, and donors. Knowledge of the rare book trade including sources and practices, prices, and effective procurement methodology. Second advanced degree in Humanities or Social Sciences discipline. Experience with grant writing. Supervisory experience. Reading knowledge of a modern foreign language (French or German preferred).
