The Ohio State University Libraries 610 Ackerman Road Columbus, Ohio 43202 Position: Associate Curator, Rare Books and Manuscripts Available: Immediately Responsibilities: Under the guidance of the Head of Rare Books and Manuscripts Section, the Curator of Early Modern Books and Manuscripts: * administers future development of primary research collections of printed books, manuscripts, reference works and other related materials * develops existing collections (e.g., Harold Grimm Reformation Collection; John Foxe Collection; Stanley Kahrl Renaissance and Restoration Drama Collection, etc.) * identifies new areas for collection development in response to OSU's local communities and trends in scholarship * active in and/or supportive of book history and book arts programs and initiatives in departments across campus * serves as chief administrator for the unit in the absence of RBMS Head * participates in development of procedures and policies for areas of responsibility * works with donors and rare books dealers in the acquisition of printed books and manuscripts * forges relationships with University faculty of The Ohio State University and promotes the use of RBMS * supervises undergraduate students, graduate students, practicum students and interns * handles reference inquiries, especially for collections under his or her responsibility * cooperates with the Special Collections Cataloging Department, the Book and Paper Conservator and other public service units at University Libraries to ensure that the collections are well described, cared for and accessible * conducts outreach including designing and organizing exhibitions; preparing finding aids; editing the library's newsletter; planning special programs such as conferences, workshops, lectures; writing and editing catalogs; preparing grants; and, outreach to non-University constituencies * serves as the liaison to The Center for Medieval Renaissance Studies and is the collection manager for the acquisition of monographs and serials related to medieval and renaissance history and culture This position has faculty status with accompanying University expectations and requirements for tenure and promotion which include teaching, research, publication and service. The Curator is expected to publish scholarly works and to be active professionally. Department: The Rare Books and Manuscripts (RBMS) collection contains primary source materials and supporting published works that do not circulate, but are available for advanced study and research in the Reading Room of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Library. RBMS has several collection strengths for the study of Early Modern literature and history. The Talfourd P. Linn Cervantes collection is an historical collection of editions of Don Quixote through the ages in various languages from the first Madrid printing to contemporary editions. RBMS' English Renaissance holdings include the Stanley Kahrl seventeenth-century drama collection; a rich, historical collection of multiple copies of different editions of John Foxe's Book of Martyrs; and, Anglican, Puritan and Catholic religious books. The Harold Grimm History of Reformation Collection contains important writings of early Protestant reformers, especially Luther and Melanchthon. Qualifications: Required: M.L.S. or M.L.I.S from an ALA accredited program or equivalent degree, or, a willingness to complete an MLS within two years. Demonstrated experience managing operations, solving complex problems, and supervising staff; interpersonal and communication skills, ability to interact with diverse teams and to effectively articulate abstract ideas. Must be self directed, flexible and adaptable to change, analytical, and results oriented. Desired: Ph.D. in a field related to the History of the Book, or medieval or early modern European literature, history, or culture. Experience with the bibliography and rare book librarianship. Working knowledge of Latin and one modern language beyond English. Two years proven experience in an academic library and/or special collections, with knowledge of archival and manuscript arrangement and description practices. Proven record of scholarship in fields relevant to the position. Salary and Rank: Minimum $42,500. The position has faculty status with rank and salary based on experience and qualifications.
