We are seeking an individual who is comfortable working in the fast-moving, interdisciplinary and competitively-funded world where library and information science and computer science meet. This individual might join ongoing research efforts centered on personalization, collaboration, or extension of digital methods to diverse libraries, or might initiate a new field of research at Rutgers, such as Medical Informatics. Level of appointment and compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. A completed Doctoral degree is required. The Department of Library and Information Science (LIS) is one of three Departments in SCILS (the others are Communication, and Journalism/Media Studies), all of which are closely linked with one another, leading to an exciting and highly interdisciplinary environment. The LIS Department has an undergraduate major in Information Technology and Informatics and a Masters in Library and Information Science (offered both in on-campus and online modes), and contributes to the SCILS-wide Masters in Communication and Information Studies and the Ph.D. Program in Communication, Information and Library Studies. Candidates can expect their teaching responsibilities to be at any or all of undergraduate, masters and Ph.D. levels. Members of the LIS Department collaborate in teaching and research with colleagues not only in SCILS, but in units throughout the University, including the Rutgers Center for Cognitive Science (RuCCS), the Department of Computer Science, the Center for Discrete Mathematics and Computer Science (DIMACS), the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, the Center for Cultural Analysis, and the Food Policy Institute. SCILS, and Rutgers University in general, strongly encourage and support interdisciplinary collaborations, leading not only to the establishment of new, cutting-edge research and teaching initiatives, but also to a stimulating and even entertaining intellectual environment. The LIS Department is typically rated among the five or six best departments or schools in North America in Library and Information Science, by peer assessment, publication, citation, and other influence measures. We are seeking to appoint someone who will help us to not only maintain, but exceed this level of recognition, ensuring leadership in teaching, research and service in the Information Age.
