Three Full-Time Tenure-Track Positions: Assistant to Full Professor

School of Library and Information Science

The School of Library and Information Science at Kent State University invites applications and nominations for three full time tenure-track positions.  These positions are designated as part of an exciting expansion of University-wide research initiatives with emphasis in information literacy, health information literacy, others areas of specialized information literacy, and informatics in any domain (social, cultural heritage, communications, health, museum, social science, humanities, and the arts.) The School of Library and Information Science is interested in individuals whose research builds on existing knowledge of information literacy and informatics and who are also able to provide instruction in specialized areas in library and information science.

The School supports one of the largest professional library and information science programs in North America and offers the only American Library Association-accredited mater’s degree program in Ohio.  The master’s degree is offered at the School’s two campuses in Kent and Columbus and through an electronic distance education network throughout the state.  Two of the positions will be available on the Kent State campus and one will be at the Columbus program, housed at the State Library of Ohio.  The Columbus program is the primary academic home of approximately 150 students.  All positions are available Fall 2008.

In addition to a research agenda in information literacy or informatics, the successful candidate must be able to provide instruction in at least one of the core areas: foundations of library and information science; access to information; organization of information; management; information technology.  Teaching competencies are also sought in any of the following areas:

  • Information access and reference services
  • Organization of Information (cataloging, indexing, metadata)
  • Archives
  • Electronic document and records management
  • Information policy
  • Information tools and technology
  • Organizational theory; personnel, program and project management

Qualifications include a Masters degree in Library and Information Science or a related field and a completed doctorate or substantial progress toward completion of a doctorate in Library and Information Science or a related field. The candidate must be able to initiate or build upon a research agenda in information literacy or informatics.  Evidence or strong potential of publication and successful grant applications in this research area is highly desirable.  Experience and/or interest in synchronous or asynchronous distance learning is preferred.  Nine-month appointment; summer teaching and workshops may be available.  Salary is competitive; benefits are excellent.  Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

SLIS is part of a dynamic college created in 2002, the College of Communication and Information, which offers strong collaborative and research opportunities with faculties in the Schools of Communication Studies (CS), Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC), and Visual Communication Design (VCD).  The School also administers a unique master’s program in Information Architecture and Knowledge Management (IAKM).

Applicants should submit a letter of application, resume, copies of transcripts from all colleges and universities attended (official transcripts will be required in the event of employment), and names of at least three references to:
