ANNOUNCEMENT OF FACULTY VACANCY
Position: Digital Collections Librarian
Available: June 1, 2008

Description/Environment
Brigham Young University (BYU), a privately owned and operated
university of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located
in Provo, Utah, invites application for a continuing faculty status
(CFS) track position in the Information Technology Division of the
Harold B. Lee Library. The library is seeking a dynamic individual who
can perform well in a rapidly changing environment. The mission of the
Digital Collections Librarian is to oversee major digitization projects
of the Lee Library, specifically those involving rare books,
manuscripts, and photographs from the L. Tom Perry Special Collections.
These projects may include significant contributions from other
institutions within the Church Consortium of Libraries and Archives
(CCLA), the Utah Academic Library Consortium (UALC), and the Greater
Western Library Alliance (GWLA). This position works with managers,
faculty, and curators at BYU and these other institutions to ensure an
appropriate workflow within the digitizing entities, communicate
progress, develop scholarly content for digital projects, and oversee
the overall design and discoverability of digital collections.

BYU, an equal opportunity employer, requires all faculty to observe the
university's honor code and dress and grooming standards. Preference is
given to qualified candidates who are members in good standing of the
affiliated church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Responsibilities:

* Work with appropriate curators in Special Collections to
identify potential digital projects by evaluating the needs of students,
faculty, and other scholars, assess unique special collections held at
the Harold B. Lee Library, and analyze data generated through the
Integrated Digital special collections (INDI) workflows project.
* Work with BYU faculty and graduate students to explore
potential value of digital projects related to their special interests.
* Develop project proposals to reformat individual primary
sources into new and unique digital collections, detailing need,
benefits, strategies, and budget requirements.
* Ensure successful timely completion of projects and oversee
productivity of individual project team members.
* Ensure that budget requirements are continually addressed,
keeping projects financially stable and financial reports accurate and
up-to-date.
* Serve as liaison with directors, faculty, and team members
from participating consortia institutions, and ensure adequate
communication among all participants and stakeholders.
* Write and edit scholarly content of introductory,
explanatory, and other texts integral to the final digital product.
* Ensure that digital collections are appropriately visible and
discoverable through suitable library finding aids and search tools.
* Stay abreast of issues and trends in the creation and
preservation of digital collections, digitizing processes, and digital
library technology.
* Serve on Library and/or University committees.
* Contribute to state, regional, and national committees and
participate in research, publication, and other professional and
scholarly activities as required by the Library Faculty Rank Advancement
document.

Qualifications:
* MLS from an ALA-accredited institution is required. However,
applicants who have related education or work experience and who are
committed to completing the MLS within a specified period of time may be
considered.
* Additional degree in a subject highlighted in the L. Tom
Perry Special Collections is preferable; e.g., American History, Mormon
History, Victorian Literature, etc.
* Experience relating to digital project design and
implementation in an academic library setting.
* Excellent analytical and problem solving skills. Must be
able to conduct thorough analysis, develop actionable recommendations,
and implement solutions to resolve complex issues in compressed time
frames.
* Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
Expected to participate in presentations, facilitate problem-solving
sessions, and competently defend analysis and recommendations. Since
digital project team members will have a variety of skill sets and
experience, the incumbent must be able to express complex concepts in
terms that each team member can easily understand.
* Demonstrated potential for leadership. Must actively
mitigate project risk to rapidly resolve issues. Must be able to drive
real and lasting change within the University, aligning team members'
behavior with Library objectives.
* Flexibility. Recognizing the dynamic nature of technology
and changing academic priorities and needs, the successful incumbent
must thrive in a fast paced, constantly changing environment, and assist
team members in dealing with change.
* Demonstrated familiarity with tools commonly used to scan,
adjust, and OCR printed materials. Familiarity with digital library
technologies and the issues of data storage, description, metadata, and
access.
