Assistant Professor/Government Documents Librarian

Mississippi State University Libraries seek enthusiastic, innovative,
dynamic, user-oriented and technologically knowledgeable applicants for
the tenure-track, entry-level faculty position of Assistant
Professor/Government Documents Librarian.  This position will be one of
a five-member team responsible for the Government Documents, Microforms,
and Current Journals Area which strives to provide complete service and
accessibility to its collections.  The Government Documents Librarian
will collaborate with team members to ensure the effective delivery of
user services, including reference, instruction, outreach, and
collection management in an information- and technology-intensive
environment.  Successful candidate will work closely with and report to
the Coordinator of Government Documents, Microforms, and Current
Journals.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:  

 

*	Share team responsibility in the organization, use, and
management of the Libraries' federal government documents collection as
it pertains to a 95% selective depository in a rapidly changing
environment and during the transition to an increasingly more electronic
environment. 
*	Promote user awareness of and access to government information
in all formats and serve as the resource person for documents reference.

*	Share team responsibility in delivering in-depth
reference/research assistance and instruction, utilizing both
traditional and electronic document resources related to U. S. and
United Nations information, to the university community and residents of
Mississippi. 
*	Provide continuing education training on documents to staff and
librarians. 
*	Share team responsibility for processing the Marcive full
batches and serials backfile records including the processing of
electronic/web government documents.  
*	Assist in the administration, supervision, and development of
the United Nations Full Deposit with Electronic Component bearing major
responsibility for the technical processing of United Nations documents.

*	Work collaboratively with Coordinator and/or Webmaster to
develop, produce, revise and/or update web pages, handouts, pathfinders,
etc. 
*	Plan and implement instruction and outreach programs that will
enable users to be aware of and to effectively use the collection. 
*	Participate in the Libraries' outreach efforts. 
*	Participate in the Libraries' Instruction program teaching
sessions on a wide range of subjects. 
*	Provide reference services to library users including a weekend
rotation schedule.  Some evening work may be required. 
*	Serve as subject bibliographer for assigned teaching
department(s). 
*	Participate in university and library-wide committees as
appropriate. 
*	Maintain a course of personal professional development through
active participation in professional associations and/or other
professional activities external to the libraries. 
*	Conduct research/creative activities in accordance with the
guidelines for promotion and tenure at the MSU Libraries.

 

Qualifications:  Required:  

 

*	Master=s degree from an ALA accredited graduate program. 
*	Familiarity with computers and Windows applications. 
*	Experience with an automated library system. 
*	Strong organizational skills as well as effective interpersonal,
collegial and communication/presentation skills (both oral and written).

*	Able to set and adjust priorities and workflow in a dynamic and
changing environment and accept new challenges in order to realize
departmental and library goals. 
*	Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and
collaboratively, maintaining effective working relationships with
colleagues, faculty, and staff in a complex and rapidly changing
environment. 
*	Demonstrate continuing commitment to professional development
and growth. 
*	Demonstrate potential for meeting the requirements for tenure
and promotion. 

 

Qualifications:  Preferred:  

 

*	Experience providing government documents reference services
and/or successful completion of coursework in government documents. 
*	Experience processing and cataloging documents in an online OPAC
environment and use of OCLC. 
*	Knowledge of federal depository guidelines and practices and
emerging trends in government information publication and dissemination.

*	Experience in developing and implementing a library instruction
and outreach program. 
*	Experience creating websites. 
*	Experience in providing reference and information services in an
academic library.

Rank and Salary:  Assistant Professor, (entry-level) $38,000 - $40,000
or commensurate with experience.
