Assistant/Associate Dean for

Indiana University Bloomington Libraries are seeking an experienced, visionary, and creative leader for the position of Assistant/Associate Dean for Library Technologies.  Reporting to the Dean, the Assistant/Associate Dean provides administrative and programmatic leadership in shaping and guiding the future of information technology and digital initiatives as well as leading the development of strategies that anticipate emerging technologies and identify new services. This position works closely with colleagues to develop and support an overall vision for information technology at a time when computing, digital, and networked resources are transforming the delivery of library resources and services.  The Assistant/Associate Dean provides innovative and strong IT leadership within the libraries and the broader university computing environment.
 
The Assistant/Associate Dean leads the operations of four departments/units:

University Environment: Founded in 1820, Indiana University-Bloomington has grown from a small state seminary into the flagship campus of a great public university with over 39,000 students and 1,800 faculty.  With a world-renowned research reputation, IUB is also known for its innovative academic programs and attentiveness to undergraduates. The campus covers over 1800 wooded acres and is distinctive for both its park-like beauty and an architectural heritage inspired by local craftsmanship in limestone.
 
The IUB Libraries (http://www.libraries.iub.edu/) are one of the leading academic research library systems in North America, providing strong collections, quality service and instructional programs, and leadership in the application of information technologies.  The IU Libraries system consists of eighteen libraries on the Bloomington campus, five libraries in Indianapolis, and a library at each of the six campuses across the state. The IUB collections include more than 6.6 million books, journals, maps, films, and audio/visual materials  in over 900 languages. The collections support every academic discipline on campus, with an emphasis in the humanities and social sciences. Users can access more than 400 databases, 43,000 electronic journals, and 224,000 electronic books, as well as locally developed digital content. The IUB Libraries are active members of regional and national associations and consortia including the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, the Association of Research Libraries, Center for Research Libraries, the Digital Library Federation (DLF), and the Research Libraries Group. In addition, IUB is a founding member of the LOCKSS and CLOCKSS and plays a leadership role in the DLF Aquifer initiative.
 
University Information Technology Services (http://uits.iu.edu/ ), with offices on the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses, develops and maintains a modern information technology environment throughout the university in support of IU's vision for excellence in research, teaching, outreach, and lifelong learning.  UITS provides tools and services to support the academic and administrative work of the university, including a high-speed campus network with wireless access, central web hosting, a rich selection of free and low-cost software for personal use, tools and support for instruction and research, massive data storage and one of the world’s fastest supercomputers for data analysis and visualization. 
 
Qualifications: An MLS, MIS or appropriate advanced degree is required, plus a minimum of eight years of substantial and progressively more responsible experience in management of information technology in a research library. Proven record of technology leadership and expertise.  Experience in project and systems management.  Ability to function in and promote a collaborative working environment while also providing effective leadership.  Evidence of successful supervisory experience, mentoring of staff, and strong management skills. Solid record of working with all levels of library personnel, as well as faculty and students. A documented record of collaboration with units within the library as well as with central computing is required.  Excellent analytical, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and a record of dealing successfully with organizational change.  Demonstrated knowledge of trends in digital libraries, information policy, collaborative technologies, scholarly communication, and the storage, management, preservation, and delivery of information. Evidence of a record of professional involvement and contribution.
Preferred: Demonstrated success in securing funding from federal and private agencies

Classification: Classification of this position is dependent on education, qualifications, and experience.  It may be filled as an academic (librarian) or non-academic (professional) appointment.  If the position is filled as an academic appointment the title will be Associate Dean for Library Technologies and the candidate must have the ability to meet the responsibilities of a tenure-track appointment; such an appointment includes eligibility for sabbatical leaves. If the position is filled as a non-academic appointment the title will be Assistant Dean for Library Technologies and will not be a tenure-track appointment.
