*Purpose of the post*

To provide leadership in resource and management services for the UK
Data Archive, including project planning, human resources and financial
forecasting.

*The UK Data Archive*

Founded in 1967, the UK Data Archive (UKDA) is an
internationally-renowned centre of expertise in data acquisition,
preservation, dissemination and promotion; and is curator of the largest
collection of digital data in the social sciences and humanities in the
UK. The UKDA provides a family of services for a range of national and
international funding organisations focussed around the provision of
access to data and the enhancement and support of both quantitative and
qualitative data for research, teaching and learning as well as the
provision of preservation services.  Current services offered include
acting as lead partner for the Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS)
on behalf of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and Joint
Information Systems Committee (JISC), the ESRC-funded Census
Registration Services and Portal, and the Arts and Humanities Research
Council funded History Data Services.  The UKDA is also a legally
designated place of deposit for the National Archives and facilitates
international data exchange through its membership of CESSDA (Council of
European Social Science Data Archives) and ICPSR (Interuniversity
Consortium for Political and Social Research)

*Duties of the Post*

The main duties of the post include:

1.      Organising the effective deployment of UKDA resources through an
appropriate quality management system incorporating project management.

2.      Supporting the implementation of strategic planning and policy
decisions within the UKDA.

3.      Providing budgeting and financial forecasts.

4.      Providing support for the preparation of new project
applications and tenders, including costings and contractual issues.

5.      Organising and administering UKDA contracts with external
funders/contractors.

6.      Oversight of UKDA human resources/personnel issues including
maintaining of staff training needs, staff reviews and issue of contracts.

7.      Liaison between UKDA and key University administrative
departments (Research Officer, Personnel, Finance), acting as the key
contact person.

8.      Contributing to regular report writing and reviews for UKDA,
including providing content for the quarterly UKDA newsletter and UKDA
promotional materials.

9.      Providing regular written briefing summaries on UKDA projects.

10.     Fact finding and gathering requirements on upcoming funding
initiatives and organising potential collaborations where appropriate.

11.     Any other such duties as may be assigned from time to time by
the Director of the UK Data Archive or his/her nominee.

/These duties are a guide to the work that the post holder will
initially be required to undertake. They may change from time to time to
meet changing circumstances and do not form part of the contract of
employment.  /

*Essential skills, experience and attributes of the post holder:*

·       Experience at a senior level in project planning/management;
·       Experience at a senior level of financial planning and budget
control;
·       Demonstrable management experience in either commercial or
academic sector organisations;
·       Experience of costing and preparing project proposals and tenders;
·       Experience of negotiating contracts and agreements together with
advising on rights issues;
·       Experience of dealing with personnel issues, including
monitoring of staff contracts and training;
·       Strong motivational skills with ability to manage effective
teamwork;
·       Ability to think strategically, to develop goals and identify
and implement  tasks to achieve them.
·       Proven track record of effective communication and networking
skills, particularly relating to bridging technical and non-technical
audiences.

·       High level of computer literacy with a high degree of
familiarity with project management software (e.g. MS Project/MS Visio)

·       Experience of applying project management methodologies and
techniques (e.g. PRINCE2, UML).

*Desirable skills, experience and attributes of post holder*

·       A degree or equivalent experience in a social science, computer
science or related discipline preferably with some knowledge of
quantitative and qualitative research;

·       IT literate with an understanding of the technical
infrastructure and operating requirements of an IT based service
organisation;

·       Understanding of current broad social science research agendas
and priorities.
