Position Vacancy
Archivist

Education:  Master's degree in library science from an accredited ALA
library school with emphasis in archival studies and conservation
techniques
or certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists.  Knowledge of
Anglo-American cataloging rules (AACR2R), Library of Congress subject
headings, machine readable cataloging (MARC) formats, and Describing
Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) required.  

Major duties and responsibilities (list is not all inclusive):
1.	Archival duties:  Manages archival and manuscript material.
Accessions, arranges, and describes individual items and collections.
Facilitates access to the collection through production and maintenance
of
finding aids. Creates original catalog records (including call numbers,
access points and tracings) in MARC (machine readable cataloging) format
for
manuscript collections and documents.  Distributes information on
library
holdings through reports to NUCMC (National Union Catalog of Manuscript
Collections). Proactive in the development of manuscript collections by
seeking appropriate material for purchase and encouraging donations.
Provides leadership in conservation and preservation of the collection.
Implements preservation procedures and practices and instructs library
staff
in approved procedures.  Develops and implements appropriate records
management procedures for library records.  Assists in the selection and
implementation of computer hardware and software. 
2.	Public service duties:   Promotes awareness and use of library
resources through presentations to the general public and to
professional
organizations.  Selects and prepares material for exhibits when
required.
Provides instruction in the use of the library catalog and finding aids.
Assists in the evaluation and development of library collections and
electronic information resources.  Assists in public service work
including
general reference services.  
3.	Other duties:  Shares responsibility for the security of the
collection.  Participates in activities to enhance professional growth.
Represents the library at meetings of affiliated historical and
professional
organizations.  Uses appropriate computer hardware and software to
accomplish tasks.  One of two primary contacts in event of an emergency
situation or disaster at the library.  Administratively takes charge in
the
absence of the Library Director and Assistant Director.  

Work Experience: Prefer professional experience with processing,
cataloging,
and indexing of materials in all formats; knowledge of Texas history a
plus.
Must be adept with use of standard software programs (MSOffice
Professional). Must have effective communication skills and able to
maintain
successful working relationships with co-workers and patrons.    

Special requirements: Knowledge of Spanish language desirable.

Working Conditions:  Usual library conditions.  Includes greeting and
directing Alamo visitors.  Average pressure of work with above average
pressure during peak workload periods.  

Tuesday through Saturday work schedule.  Salary commensurate with
experience; benefits included.  Occasional evenings may be required.
