Librarian for Scholarly Communication --  Northwestern University Library

Library: Librarian for Scholarly Communication, Northwestern
University Library. Position summary: Responsible for  developing and
managing a program to promote awareness and knowledge in the issues of 
scholarly communication among Northwestern faculty and administrators, in
cooperation with other Northwestern University librarians;  and to
encourage faculty participation in strategies that support open access and
facilitate more cost effective scholarly communication. Develop and promote
lecture programs, Web sites, and other mechanisms to foster this awareness
on campus. In a complex academic environment, provide expertise and
assistance in work with faculty, Academic Technologies, and Library staff
in developing collaborative enterprises using shared large data
collections. Help to develop open institutional repositories to enhance
dissemination of research results from Northwestern University scholars,
and to encourage faculty use of these repositories.  Responsible for
establishing a committee to examine and manage scholarly communication
issues library-wide. Responsible for faculty liaison with and collection
management for one or more departments; specific subject responsibilities
to be determined based on Library needs and successful candidate's
expertise. Qualifications: Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited
library school or the equivalent combination of education and relevant
library experience. At least two years' experience as a librarian in an
academic or research library, involved with issues of electronic
collections; or other practical experience in the publishing industry or
other environment closely involved with scholarly communications including
online resources. Demonstrable understanding and interest in the current
issues related to scholarly communication including open access and
copyright. The successful candidate will have excellent oral and written
communication skills and the ability to work effectively with faculty,
colleagues and other library users. Preferred: background or
experience in the sciences; knowledge of HTML and Web page design.
Environment:  Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, is a major
private university with an extensive library system. This includes the
Northwestern University Library, three branch libraries on the Evanston
Campus, and three libraries on the Chicago Campus.  Northwestern
University Library is a member of the Association of Research Libraries
(ARL) and participates in programs of the Committee on Institutional
Cooperation (CIC).  The holdings of the libraries total over 4 million
