Science Librarian --  Western Michigan University -- Michigan
 
WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY LIBRARIESScience Librarian
Western Michigan University (WMU) seeks a creative and service-oriented
professional to serve as a reference and instruction librarian in the
natural and physical sciences. This librarian must possess the knowledge
and expertise necessary to develop collections and deliver services
appropriate to WMU's Carnegie Classification designation "research
university with high research activity." RESPONSIBILITIES: The science
librarian works under the direction of the Head of Science Reference, will
be a member of a departmental team of three librarians and one professional
staff, will employ collaborative approaches in the development of
information literacy services and programs, and will help promote a
climate of scholarly research and inquiry. The Science Librarian serves as
the primary liaison between University Libraries and the departments in
Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geosciences, Physics and Mathematics.
Librarian provides general and specialized reference services, which may
include weekend rotation; recommends resources and contributes to
collection development decisions and initiatives; engages in ongoing
assessment of library resources and services to meet the needs of students
and faculty in the sciences and participates in scholarship and service in
keeping with the promotion standards of the faculty of Western Michigan
University. QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Degree from an ALA accredited
program in library information science; undergraduate degree in science
discipline related to this position's liaison responsibilities; library
reference experience and demonstrated knowledge of resources in the
sciences; Strong customer service orientation; broad experience with
information technologies and reference resources in academic libraries;
library instruction or other teaching experience, and knowledge of ACFL
information literacy objectives; demonstrated experience with web-based
technologies and awareness of emerging information trends; Ability to work
independently and collaboratively with library staff and other university
faculty; excellent organization, interpersonal, and communication skills;
Commitment to professional development and the ability to meet the
requirements of tenure and promotion. Preferred: Advanced degree in
science discipline related to liaison responsibilities, two years
experience in academic or research library, Experience creating or
maintain websites, blogs, wikis, podcasts/screen casts, RSS feeds, and
other online information and learning tools. APPOINTMENT AND COMPENSATION:
Full-time twelve months tenure-track appointment. Faculty rank, status,
privileges, and responsibilities. Expected start date February/March 2008.
Minimum: $47,875 for Assistant Professor plus generous benefits. Salary
