Librarian, Head of Technical Services --  Western Michigan University --

Western Michigan University LibrariesLibrarian, Head of Technical Services
Western Michigan University (WMU) seeks an innovative and service-oriented
librarian, associate professor rank, to lead and coordinate technical
services. This librarian must possess the knowledge and expertise
necessary to provide access to our collections and deliver services
appropriate to WMU's Carnegie Classification designation "research
university with high research activity." The technical services unit uses
the Voyager system, OCLC, MARCIVE, SFX and Verde. RESPONSIBILITIES: The
Head of Technical Services coordinates acquisition, cataloging (including
non-MARC metadata), processing, binding and serial resources procedures;
plans, directs, manages and evaluates all technical services staff and
operations. Contributes expertise and leadership in the libraries' digital
and scholarly communications initiatives. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Degree
from ALA accredited program in library or information science; Evidence of
5+ years progressively responsible administrative experience in Technical
Services; experience negotiating and managing library collections
contracts; experience with integrated library systems and OCLC; strong
information technology skills; extensive experience with
cataloging/metadata, using standards and practices, metadata schema,
Library of Congress Subject Headings, and Library of Congress
classification; demonstrated experience implementing measures that enhance
oversight and access to library materials through such means as electronic
data interchange, electronic resource management systems, federated
search, open url and institutional repository, effective oral and written
communication skills; evidence of research, scholarly and/or creative
activity; continuing commitment to professional development; and the
ability to meet the requirements of tenure and promotion; ability to stay
informed on new practices, trends, developments, and standards in the
Technical Services field. Preferred: Experience with Voyager integrated
library system; second masters' degree in relevant field; experience using
XML (e.g. Test Encoding Initiative or Resource Description Framework); a
working knowledge of relevant standards and protocols such as SUSHI and
OAI-PMH; reading knowledge of a foreign language.APPOINTMENT AND
COMPENSATION: Full-time twelve months tenure-track appointment. Faculty
rank, status, privileges, and responsibilities. Expected start date
February/March 2008. Minimum: $59,125 for Associate Professor plus
generous benefits. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
