The Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center of West Virginia University/Charleston Division, located in Charleston, the capital of West Virginia, invites application and nominations for the position of Director of the Health Sciences Library. WVU is a comprehensive land grant university. The Charleston Division is a community based clinical campus, which consists of Undergraduate programs in the schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Nursing in addition to Graduate Programs through our Extended Learning Center. The Health Science Center is affiliated with Charleston Area Medical Center a 900 + tertiary care medical facility. The community is a scenic mid-sized city nestled in a mountain valley. The area provides a full range of cultural and recreational activities including the Northeast’s best skiing, hiking and whitewater rafting. It has one of the lowest crime rates in the country and has easy access to several of the Mid-Atlantic’s largest metropolitan areas.

The Health Science Library is an administrative unit of the University Libraries. The Director of the Charleston Division Health Sciences Library reports to the Associate Vice-President for Health Sciences. The Health Sciences Library serves as a resource library to Southern West Virginia.

Responsibilities:  As a key member of the HSC staff, the Director will provide vision and strategic leadership for the development of a learning commons environment with innovative programs to support the research, teaching, and service mission of the Health Sciences Center. The position is responsible for coordinating, managing, and directing the planning, architecture, and implementation of a learning commons infrastructure for teaching, practice and research in an academic health sciences environment, including managing and policy-making for an active health sciences library, which is moving rapidly over to an emphasis on delivering information to point-of-need and digital format.

Develop and implement policy on selection, purchase and usage of digital learning resources appropriate for an academic health sciences center. Determine and design space and equipment requirements to meet objectives for a learning commons environment in  an academic health sciences center and a regional teaching hospital.

Assess, plan and set goals for a learning commons suited to teaching, research and training of health care students and practicing health care professionals. Develop and implement an ongoing multi-year plan to transition to a learning commons environment.

Qualifications:   ALA-accredited MLS required with a second advanced degree preferred; one preferably in library and information sciences (MLIS) from an ALA     or other professionally accredited program. Extensive experience in an academic health science or university health science center; experience with a learning commons approach; a record of progressively substantive administrative responsibilities; experience in budget management, proven leadership management, interpersonal and communication skills; knowledge of and involvement with current issues and developments in health sciences librarianship and electronic information management.

Rank/Salary:  Twelve-month faculty position at the Assistant University Librarian or above is available.
