Graduate Research Assistantships

University of Maryland, College of Information Studies

(College Park, MD) The College of Information Studies is looking for new Ph.D. students in Information Studies with a strong potential for conducting research on the application of computational linguistics to study the adoption and diffusion of information technology innovations. The ideal candidate will have earned a Master’s degree in a field that relates people, information, and technology (Management Information Systems, Information Studies, Information Management, Information Technology, Computer Science, Science and Technology Studies, etc.). Students selected for this opportunity will work directly with Professors Ping Wang (www.wam.umd.edu/~pwang), Doug Oard (www.glue.umd.edu/~oard) and Ken Fleischmann (www.clis.umd.edu/people/fleischmann) on a research project sponsored by the National Science Foundation (http://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward.do?AwardNumber=0729459).

In addition, there are opportunities to work with other faculty and students in one of three interdisciplinary research centers: the Computational Linguistics and Information Processing Laboratory, the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory, and the Center for Information Policy and Electronic Government. Students will learn to define research problems, identify research questions, build analytical and empirical models, conduct rigorous analyses, draw insightful results, and communicate those results orally and in writing. A background in computational linguistics and/or scholarly analysis of the evolution of information technology would be highly desirable. These positions start no later than fall 2008 (start date in spring or summer 2008 may be possible) and are renewable for up to three years (subject to satisfactory progress and the availability of funds), and include tuition, stipend, and health benefits.

The application procedure for doctoral studies in the College of Information Studies is described at www.clis.umd.edu/admissions/phd_admissions.shtml. Applicants should mention this announcement in the “statement of research interests” to ensure consideration for these positions. Please include one or two single-authored sample papers (published papers, working papers, technical reports, or theses) with your application. Review of applications will begin immediately. In addition, applicants for these positions are strongly encouraged to contact Dr. Ping Wang <[log in to unmask]>. Please mention "NSF RAship" in the email subject line.
