Library Director --  University of Puget Sound -- Washington
 
LIBRARY DIRECTOR
The University of Puget Sound invites nominations and applications for the
position of Library Director. Located in Tacoma, Washington, Puget Sound is
an independent national undergraduate liberal arts institution with select
graduate programs in education and the health sciences. With an enrollment
of 2,600 students from 47 states and 13 countries, Puget Sound is the only
nationally ranked independent undergraduate liberal arts college in
Western Washington. Established in 1888, the University's 11:1
student-faculty ratio provides students with personal attention from over
200 faculty members who have a strong commitment to teaching. Our client
seeks a leader who is passionate about undergraduate higher education,
understands the liberal arts college environment, enjoys working with
faculty, and energetically promotes the role of the library in campus life
and the educational process. As chief administrative and fiscal officer for
the library, the Library Director provides leadership and administrative
guidance in planning, organizing, coordinating, directing, and evaluating
all library services and functions and in integrating them with the
instructional programs of the university. This individual will assume
leadership of library programs and sustain the record of creative
development established during the past decade.We seek candidates who have
a proven track record in setting a collaborative tone and communicating
well in order to build community within the library and with faculty,
students, and colleagues. An experienced and imaginative professional who
has a clear vision of emerging library issues and the capacity to lead
organizational change when needed, the Director will help the campus
continue to strike a balance between the print and digital library worlds
and feel excitement about the library's role in building digital
information services for the campus. The Library Director should be
capable of building especially strong working relationships with
Information Services and should recognize that such working relationships
are essential for the effective functioning of each area.Collins Memorial
Library houses collections of over 500,000 print volumes and maintains
direct electronic access to some 35,000 titles. The University of Puget
Sound also holds membership in the Orbis Cascade Alliance, a library
consortium of public and private institutions of higher education in the
Northwest providing the Summit digital union catalog as well as Orbis
Cascade borrowing, database licensing, and courier services. Collins
Library has an annual budget of over $2.8 million and a staff of 7
librarians and 16 full and part-time paraprofessionals, as well as
approximately 85 student workers. The library has been recently renovated
(2000, $6.4m) and includes a highly popular Information Commons in close
proximity to spacious reading rooms. Collins Library supports evolving
innovative programs in reference service, information literacy, and
digital information management, and participates as a member of the
National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education.A Master's degree
in Library Science and/or Information Science from an ALA-accredited
program is required. Additional advanced degree in an appropriate field is
preferred. The ideal candidate will have substantial professional
experience, including at least five years in an academic library setting
with responsibilities at the department head level or above. Significant
experience in an academic environment, particularly with a liberal arts
institution, is highly preferred.Qualified and interested candidates
