University Librarian --  Vanderbilt University -- Tennessee
 
University Librarian
Vanderbilt University invites applications and nominations for the
position of University Librarian, the senior leadership position of its
Jean and Alexander Heard Library. Reporting to the Office of the Provost,
the University Librarian works closely with the academic deans, other
members of the administration, and the faculty to support the university's
multifaceted mission. The University seeks a thoughtful, experienced,
forward-looking, creative and effective leader, dedicated to serving the
needs and interests of its campus community while guiding the Heard
Library's evolution in a time of steady change. In addition, the
successful candidate will:* bring a deep understanding of academic life in
all of its many dimensions* articulate a compelling vision for the
developing role of the library in the modern research university, a vision
that recognizes the enduring strength of library traditions, the softening
of disciplinary boundaries, and the increasing role of technology* possess
excellent managerial, interpersonal, communication, organizational,
budgetary and planning skills* be prepared to play a leadership role in
efforts to raise funds from alumni, from corporate, foundation and other
private sources, and from federal sources* be committed to the
recruitment, development and retention of a highly talented and diverse
workforce. After naming a new Librarian, and with a view toward launching
a major library-enhancement effort, the University will initiate a
comprehensive study of the Heard Library. This study will begin with a
campus-wide conversation aimed at identifying the characteristics of the
academic library Vanderbilt will need to carry it forward through the
first half of the 21st century. The new University Librarian will be a
guiding voice and spirit in that conversation. Further, the University
Librarian will have the opportunity to work with other institutional
leaders to consider how to make the best use of information technology
across the full range of the University's activities and interests.
Located in Nashville, Tennessee, a vibrant, dynamic city with a
metropolitan-area population of over one million, Vanderbilt University is
a private research university enrolling more than 10,000 students, of which
6,000 are undergraduates. In FY2007, Vanderbilt awarded 227 Ph.D. degrees
and received grants and contracts exceeding $500 million.The Heard
Library, with a collection of more than 3 million volumes, a staff of over
200 and an annual budget exceeding $20 million, is organized into nine
units aligned with the University's schools and colleges; the University
Librarian oversees eight of those nine. The Library is a member of the
Association of Research Libraries, the Association of Southeastern
Research Libraries, and other organizations, as well.Salary is negotiable,
commensurate with qualifications and experience. Applications should
