Head, Special Collections Smithsonian Institution Libraries Washington, DC
The Smithsonian Libraries is looking for an energetic, outgoing leader to
develop and promote the Libraries' rare books and special collections
through a dynamic and forward-looking program aimed at scholars, students,
and the general public. Encompassing more than 50,000 rare books and
manuscripts, the special collections at the Smithsonian Institution
represent one of the nation's great treasures. Many texts date from the
15th through the 18th centuries and are in Latin, other classical
languages, German and French. Although the collection covers a broad range
of subjects, its heaviest concentration is in science, technology, natural
history and applied and decorative arts. The SI Libraries takes special
pride in the collection and promotes outreach through publications, public
programs, presentations, professional activities, an active Resident
Scholars program and a dedicated exhibition space to bring the collection
to the public. The incumbent will manage the Dibner Library of the History
of Science and Technology and the Joseph F. Cullman 3rd Library of Natural
History and advise staff in our branch libraries on issues concerning
their special collections. As a member of the SI Libraries senior staff,
this position develops and implements policies, provides oversight for
special collections throughout the system, and supports the Libraries'
digital library program and fund-raising activities. The successful
applicant will have experience managing both human and fiscal resources
and must have expert knowledge of rare book librarianship. Subject matter
competency in Early Modern or Renaissance history and/or the history of
science and technology is highly desirable. This is a Federal Civil
Service position. For additional details and application instructions go

This announcement closes November 13, 2007. The Smithsonian Institution is
