The person in this position will be responsible for all aspects of managing the Chinese language materials and related user services. For more information on UM Libraries, visit the website: http://www.lib.umd.edu Responsibilities: Selects Chinese materials and manages the Chinese Collection. Performs original and copy cataloging for these materials in all subject areas and formats via OCLC and the UM Library's integrated library system. Participates in national cooperative cataloging programs. May lead the Non-Roman Production Team on a rotating basis. Provides reference and user education services. Serves as a liaison to the University faculty on Chinese studies. Engages in Libraries' outreach activities. Hires, trains, and supervises staff and students. Maintains excellent working relations with the Library faculty and staff within Technical Services, East Asia and Prange collections, and other units within the UM Libraries. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications and Experience: Required: ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library Science; minimum of one year of relevant cataloging experience and at least one year of reference, bibliographic instruction, or collection management experience in an academic, research, or special library; proficiency with automated library systems, AACR2, LCRIs, LC classification, LCSH, and MARC21 formats, via a national bibliographic utility; understanding of technical services operations, Library of Congress cataloging practices, and emerging cataloging issues and trends; native fluency in Chinese language; ability to read and transliterate Chinese characters using pinyin romanization system; knowledge of Chinese publishing industry in print and electronic formats; knowledge of Chinese history, literature and culture; ability to work collaboratively in a team environment; strong service orientation; excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Preferred: experience with name authority work; understanding relationship between pinyin and Wade-Giles romanizations. Desirable: knowledge of metadata standards for digital projects; demonstrated record of professional activity. Applications: Electronic applications are preferred.
