VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY LIBRARY
LIBRARY INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SERVICE

POSITION:  Systems Librarian
DESCRIPTION:  Provides technology and computer support for the
Vanderbilt Library. The major areas of responsibility include developing,
maintaining and assisting in the enhancement of interfaces to web-enabled
database applications (currently implemented in perl, PHP, and MySQL). The
position also helps establish and maintain guidelines (coding standards,
version control, etc.) for the development of new applications in support
of library patrons, staff, and faculty across the university.   This
position will also provide first line backup for Unix system
administration.  Other duties and assignments will be negotiated based on
the successful candidate's expertise, team needs, and library priorities.
The person in this position will be involved in various project teams,
occasionally in a leadership role, and library committees.  This position
also works closely with several other systems librarians, our automation
coordinator, and our web coordinator.  While technical competence is
critical, a thorough understanding of libraries and library goals and
values is equally important to successfully filling the role.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required for this position are: an MLS from an ALA
accredited program plus two years' full time technical support experience,
excellent communications and organizational skills, ability to learn new
technical skills quickly, ability to meet deadlines; customer
service-oriented with ability to work effectively with computer users at
all levels of technical competence; ability to work flexibly and
collaboratively within a team composed of librarians and library
technology professionals; experience working in a higher education,
research organization, or library environment; strong problem-solving and
analytical skills; Unix system administration experience; two years'
database programming experience with SQL, perl, PHP, or Java; knowledge of
object-oriented analysis and design.
ENVIRONMENT: Vanderbilt University consists of ten schools and
colleges with an enrollment of over 11,000. The Jean & Alexander Heard
Library system has a collection of over 3 million volumes in eight
libraries and a staff of over 200. Vanderbilt University is a member of
the Association of Research Libraries, the Association of Southeastern
Research Libraries, and SOLINET. The library is highly automated with an
online system based on Sirsi software. Library Information Technology
Services is a team-based unit. The team works collaboratively with the
libraries to facilitate effective computing and provide leadership in the
design, development, implementation and maintenance of technology services
for library users.
COMPENSATION: Salary negotiable, commensurate with experience.
