Cataloging Librarian. Mervyn H. Sterne Library, University of Alabama at
Birmingham. Position Available January 1, 2008, at rank of Assistant
Librarian, based on qualifications. A twelve-month non-tenure earning
academic environment; salary range $34,000 - $47,000; generous fringe
benefits. Responsible for original descriptive cataloging and metadata
creation for monograph materials for input into OCLC, and assignment of
LC call numbers and subject headings for member input records. Equally
important responsibilities include managing authority procedures of the
Library, creation of original authority records, and importing of LC
authority records for the local catalog. Requirements: Master's degree
from an ALA-accredited program; reading knowledge of at least one
foreign language; one-year experience in cataloging and metadata
principles and tools, including knowledge of MARC and metadata formats,
Library of Congress classification and subject headings. Preferred:
General cataloging experience using the OCLC and the Voyager systems,
reading knowledge of one ore more Eastern European languages.

Reference Librarian. Mervyn H. Sterne Library, University of Alabama at
Birmingham. Non-tenure earning position available immediately at the
rank of Assistant Librarian or Senior Assistant Librarian based on
qualifications. A twelve-month academic appointment; salary range
$34,000 - $47,000; commensurate with qualifications and experience;
generous fringe benefits. Must be service-oriented. Responsible to the
Head of Reference for providing general reference service to the user
population at all levels, including the research level. Responsibilities
include library instruction for general and specialized classes; library
research assistance, including instruction in the use of electronic
resources; and assistance with outreach programs to students and student
organizations. The incumbent should possess sound knowledge of general
reference principles and tools, including effective database searching
techniques; the ability to provide effective group instruction;
effective communication skills, and the ability to work individually and
with a team in providing library assistance to a wide variety of users.
Requirements: A Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program and
previous library experience. Preferred: An undergraduate background in
humanities or the social sciences, general reference experience in an
academic library, and experience in collection development. Applications

of Alabama at Birmingham. Position available immediately at the rank of
Assistant Librarian or Senior Assistant Librarian based on
qualifications. A twelve-month academic appointment; salary range
$34,000 - $47,000; commensurate with qualifications and experience;
generous fringe benefits. Must be service-oriented. Responsible for
providing reference service to a broad and diverse user population in
the state's largest metropolitan center. Responsibilities include
bibliographic instruction and collection development in the subject
areas of education juvenile collection development and maintenance; and
Alabama K-12 public school textbook adoption review display. Regularly
scheduled evening and weekend hours. Requirements: master's degree from
an ALA-accredited program; a degree in education, the humanities, or the
social sciences; and previous library experience. Preferred: Reference
experience in academic library, experience with electronic resources,
collection development experience, a degree in education, and a second
Master's degree. Position expected to be filled by February 1, 2008
