Information Services Librarian
Humanities and Social Sciences, English Concentration

Miami University Libraries, Oxford, Ohio,, has an opening in the Information Services Department for an English/humanities librarian. We seek a self-motivated, service-oriented, team-player with a can-do attitude who is interested in reference, collection development, teaching, and information technology; someone who can embrace an environment of continual improvement and change in an organization that strives to stay close to the cutting edge of technology. This position reports to the Head, Information Services, Interim Assistant Dean.

Responsibilities: Create and maintain strong relationships with faculty and students in the Department of English and other departments based on library need; develop and manage collections in those disciplines; assist students, faculty, staff, and the general public with research help in the humanities, social sciences, and business in-house and via email, chat, and IM (evenings and weekends required); develop and teach credit/non-credit courses and workshops for librarians, students, faculty and staff of the university; apply computer skills to library services in concert with library colleagues; staff the Center for Information Management (multi-media development facility); participate and contribute to the Libraries’ team organization.

Requirements: Graduate library degree from an ALA accredited institution. Undergraduate degree in the English, literature or related field or relevant library experience. Strong commitment to high quality public service; teaching skills to proficiently instruct about information fluency; analytical skills to effectively retrieve information especially from resources in the humanities and social sciences; flexibility to work in an environment of continual change and cultivate team work; ability to work independently as well as with all levels of staff and diverse library customers; strong computer knowledge including skill in use and application of multimedia software; strong written and oral communication skills; initiative and ability to conceive and carry out projects; ability to meet the Libraries’ requirements for promotion and continuing contract; sense of humor.

Highly Desirable: A masters degree in English; experience teaching credit classes, workshops, and one-to-one; public services experience in an academic library.

Environment: Miami University Libraries, Oxford, Ohio, has a strong tradition of excellent public service and of building collections that support the university’s education and research activities. The Libraries contain over 3.2 million volumes, including an extensive collection of government documents and microforms, and subscribe to over 35,000 serials and 100+ electronic databases available via the library web system. They serve 850 teaching and research faculty, 15,000 undergraduates and 1,000 graduate students. The Libraries have 46 professionals, 58 support staff, belong to OCLC, CRL, SPARC, and are active members of the OhioLINK consortium.

Rank and Benefits: This is a full-time twelve month appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Librarian. Rank and salary are based upon experience and qualifications. Benefits include Blue Cross/Blue Shield, major medical, dental and term life insurance. Ohio Public Employees Retirement System or alternate Retirement Program (ARP).
