  ANNOUNCES A SEARCH FOR AN 
  ASSOCIATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN FOR DIGITAL INITIATIVES AND TECHNICAL SERVICES 
  Position: Associate University Librarian for Digital Initiatives and Technical Services (AUL/DI&TS)
Primary Location:  The Gelman Library System, The Gelman Library
  RESPONSIBILITIES: The George Washington University’s Gelman Library System is seeking nominations and applications for a visionary, creative leader to guide a dynamic, multi-faceted digital services program.  The person in this position will have the opportunity to take a lead role in developing policies and implementing changes in digital planning and services not just within the library system but in the Washington Research Library Consortium (WRLC) and the University, and will assist with the re-visioning project currently under way with our technical services infrastructure.  This person will also work closely with the AUL for Collections and Scholarly Communication to develop and lead a new digital publishing initiative for the University.  
  The AUL/DI&TS works closely with others to develop cooperative initiatives to enhance services to users, including: AULs, faculty and university-wide technology departments (including Academic Technologies, Information Systems, and Student and Academic Support Services); staff of the Washington Research Library Consortium; and staff in WRLC member libraries.  
  The AUL/DI&TS reports to the University Librarian and works closely with three other Associate University Librarians as part of the administrative team that provides leadership for the library system.  As a member of the senior administrative team, the AUL/DI&TS contributes to planning, policy development, resource management and decision-making for the Gelman Library System, which is comprised of the main library, the libraries of the Mount Vernon and Virginia campuses and the two art galleries.
  The AUL/DI&TS is responsible for planning, managing and supporting all technology-based operations, including: the consortia-based library systems; technical services processing; digital library initiatives and infrastructure; remote and local networked information resources; digital publishing initiatives; staff and public work stations; and the Technical Services Division (acquisitions, electronic resources, and resource description).  
  The AUL/DI&TS has administrative responsibility for three programs: Library Information Technology (desktop support), Digital Initiatives and Technical Services. The AUL/DI&TS is responsible for developing annual budget requests; projecting long-term needs; preparing and submitting reports on expenditures; and tracking university-wide and national information technology trends and initiatives.  
  BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:  ALA-accredited Master’s degree in library or information science, or Master’s degree in computer science or information technology.  Minimum seven years of experience as a professional librarian or information technology specialist in increasingly responsible positions in academic or research libraries, in a commercial vendor providing services to academic libraries, or a combination of the two.  At least five years of experience in a managerial or supervisory role in technical services, technology or digital collections.  Experience working on a strategic planning team.
  EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES PREFERRED: Second graduate degree.  Substantive experience in budget preparation, projection and analysis.  Deep knowledge of current library technology applications and service issues as demonstrated by experience in the development of systems of significant magnitude.  Record of effective engagement with faculty and other library users in the development of innovative digital systems.  Experience with assessment of user needs and impact of innovative programs in meeting those needs.  Experience with workflow analysis and/or project management as demonstrated in the ability to guide a flexible staff through a range of projects.  Experience with successful grant proposals.  Excellent organizational and communication skills.  Willingness and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within and beyond the library.  Record of professional contributions.  
  APPOINTMENT RANK & SALARY: Salary and appointment at the rank of Librarian III/IV, depending upon qualifications and experience.  Salary range minimum:  $74,000 - $85,000 per year, plus an adjustment based on number of years of experience.  This position includes an administrative stipend. Comprehensive benefits package that includes: 22 days/year paid annual leave; 12 days per year paid sick leave; TIAA/CREF; and tuition assistance.
