The American University of Afghanistan offers four-year liberal-arts degrees in Business Administration and Information Communication Technology with all classes taught in English located in Kabul. The University also offers courses aimed at Afghan professionals who are working for international organizations, government departments and private companies. These courses improve skills such as Business English communication techniques and prepare students for TOEFL exam. 

 

AUAF is a private and not-for Profit University which is financed through grants from USAID, tuition fees and other donations. AUAF is seeking exceptional individuals to fill the position of Director of Library.

 

The Director of the Library will report to the Dean of Academic Affairs until the Vice President of Academic Affairs/Provost is in place.

 

Job Summary:

         

The Director of the Library has overall responsibility for collections, services, and facilities, and provides the leadership and direction for all professional staff, support staff, and student assistants in the university library.  Specific duties include collection development, cataloging, and provision of reference services, as well as the establishment, organization and maintenance of AUAf instructional materials in the library and departmental resource centers and reading rooms.  The Director of the Library has primary responsibility for building the vision and plans for the Library, the management of collections funds and operating budgets; library public relations; staff selection, supervision and development; and facilities planning for this library.  The Director of the Library participates actively in the organizational support of AUAF programs and services, and is included in the AUAF administrative staff meetings ; s/he fosters and maintains strong ties with the FSP, PDI and Undergraduate faculty and administration. The Director of the Library also promotes responsive, high quality services for the entire university community.

 

The Director of the Library is responsible for the following:

 

v  Develop library policies including those for acquisitions, collection development, staffing, book loans/circulation, reference services, and other library operations

v  Collection development and management including acquisition of new materials, based on reviews of the literature and recommendations of faculty and suppliers

v  Design, implement and carry out the system and procedures for processing, cataloguing and indexing of documents, books, and other print and electronic materials.

v  Provide loan and reference/research services to faculty, staff and students, including bibliographic instruction regarding use of library facilities and research tools

v  Review and select electronic resources for the library, including acquisition of databases.

v  Develop links with other libraries or similar institutions that are beneficial to AUAf, including collaboration on the digital library project of the Afghan eQuality Alliance, and serving as the contact person for the AMICAL consortium of American University libraries

v  Supervise the work of librarians, library assistants, student assistants and/or volunteers.

v  Budgeting for the library including costs of materials acquisition, staffing, general operations.

v  Liaising with AUAf and external IT and other staff as required.

v  Process new items.  Catalog materials using established resource room/lab procedures.

v  Maintain and monitor inventory control ( e.g., sign-out and sign-in of materials) and follow-up on missing materials.

v  Monitor supplies and identify requirements for the Audio/Visual resource room and library.

v  Other duties as assigned.

v  Conducting self in a professional and ethical manner at all times and not entering into any activities that may adversely affect the image of AUAf or part thereof.


 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

v   Masters Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited school

v   Extensive knowledge of information sources and content systems, including relevant databases, internet services and library services. Ability to use automated information systems as applicable to libraries.

v  Experience with electronic instructional software, preferably in a university environment.

v  Experience teaching information literacy and online courses.

v  Excellent analytical, project management and organizational skills.

v  Experience in providing reference and research assistance.

v  Experience living in non-western countries, preferably in a post-conflict environment.

v  Experience with information technologies and their applications in a library setting.

v  Good communication and public relation skills.

v  Ability and willingness to work with people of different cultural and religious backgrounds and diverse political views while maintaining impartiality and objectivity.

v  Ability to work under pressure and within limited timeframes.

v  Excellent computer skills to include Microsoft Office applications and internet software.

v  Fluent oral and excellent written English. Experience in Dari and/or Pashtu is an advantage.
