Description: Reporting to the Head, Bibliographic Control Department, the position is responsible for the processing and cataloging of materials added to the Library’s special collections. The incumbent has primary responsibility for coordinating activities of the unit and supervision of two support staff. The successful applicant will be expected to perform original and complex copy cataloging and authority work in multiple formats and in a variety of languages, following prescribed national standards. The coordinator serves as a liaison to the Special Collections Department. Other duties as assigned. Special Collections includes over 100,000 volumes, over 500,000 literary and historical manuscripts, maps, ephemera, prints and drawings. Special Collections strengths include the book arts; American, English and Irish literature; American history, exploration and travel; applied and decorative art; the history of chemistry and technology; the history of horticulture and landscape architecture; and Delawareana.
Qualifications: Required: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program. Familiarity with cataloging/processing of rare books and special collections materials. An understanding of the unique role of primary source materials in today’s research environment and their use by faculty, scholars, and students. Familiarity with the MARC format, Library of Congress classification and subject headings, and Anglo American Cataloging Rules, 2nd ed. rev. Knowledge of Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials, related rare book sources and tools, and trends in rare book cataloging. Strong interpersonal skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work productively and cooperatively in a complex environment while maintaining effective working relationships. Preferred: Supervisory experience. Cataloging experience in an academic library. Working knowledge of a western European language.
Salary: Expect to hire at the rank of Assistant Librarian or Senior Assistant Librarian. Assistant Librarian rank is entry level for academic librarians with less than 3 years of professional experience.
