Humanities & Social Sciences Librarian

Portland State University is seeking a progressive and energetic professional for the position of Humanities and Social Sciences Librarian to provide reference and information services for the Universitys faculty and students as well as members of the general public, participate in a dynamic instructional program, consult and collaborate with scholars in specific academic units, and select information resources to support the instructional and research needs of the diverse students and scholars of the University.

This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position with the rank of Assistant Professor. This position reports to the Assistant University Librarian for Public Services, contributes to the profession through professional service and scholarly activities, and participates in faculty governance activities within the Library and University.

Specific Responsibilities

•       Consults and collaborates with the Departments of Anthropology, Black Studies, History, International Studies and Philosophy, and Programs in Chicano/Latino Studies, Conflict Resolution, and Judaic Studies, assessing information needs and cultivating bridges for service and teaching. 

•       Provides reference and information services for the Universitys faculty and students as well as members of the general public, including some evening and weekend hours.

•       Participates in instructional activities to create meaningful learning experiences for students.

•       In collaboration with the Instruction Team, participates in the Librarys information literacy efforts and the Librarys general instruction program, with the possibility of teaching courses for credit.

•       Selects books, serials, databases, and other information resources to support the instructional and research needs of the students and scholars of the University in the assigned disciplines.

•       Contributes to virtual reference services.

•       Maintains up-to-date expertise via participation at workshops and professional associations, and through awareness of the scholarly literature.

•       Contributes to the work of relevant committees and workgroups in the Portland State Library and the Portland State University community of scholars.

•       Contributes to the work of professional associations, locally, regionally, nationally, or internationally.

•       Engages in relevant scholarly activities.

•       Develops virtual learning/research resources in the assigned disciplines.

•       Maintains an awareness of scholarly communication issues in general and within the assigned disciplines and contributes to advocacy efforts.

Required Qualifications

•       An ALA-accredited MLS or its equivalent.

•       A bachelors or higher degree in a humanities or social sciences field.

•       2 years of experience working as an academic or research librarian.

•       Commitment to service.

•       Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

•       Ability to work collaboratively with diverse colleagues, faculty, and students.

•       Experience providing reference and information services.

•       Collection development experience.

•       Flexible and adaptable with ability to work in a dynamic, changing and diverse environment.

•       Working knowledge of digital and web-related technologies to enhance library services.

•       Experience integrating information literacy concepts into teaching.

•       Potential to meet promotion and tenure requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

•       Experience working as a librarian with responsibility for at least one of the subject areas listed above.

•       Graduate degree in one of the above subject areas.

•       Successful experience in working with online learning applications.

Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience, as well as an excellent benefits package including fully paid health care, reduced tuition rates, and a generous retirement and vacation package.  Librarians are members of the Academic Faculty and participate in University-wide faculty governance.
