Visiting Applications Developer - Champaign, IL

GSLIS seeks to hire a Visiting Applications Developer. The Applications Developer is primarily responsible for creating websites, developing software, and managing databases for a variety of needs throughout the School. Applications Development is a subgroup of the Office of Information Technology and Research (OITR), which provides a full range of services in support of the School's missions of teaching, research, and outreach/public service.

Key Responsibilities:

* Building and maintaining front-office systems to support administrative staff (designing/managing databases of personnel and course information, creating entry and report forms, managing data feeds to and from UIUC sources, etc.)

* Building and maintaining systems for distributing course enrollment data, user accounts and roles/permissions, to other internal systems (JAVA)

* Maintaining/customizing/improving our local installation of the Moodle courseware management system.

* Maintaining/customizing/improving the GSLIS website (www.lis.uiuc.edu).

* Writing and maintaining back-end scripts to automate creation and maintenance of iCard door access privileges.

* Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

* Minimum BS in Computer Science or related field.

* Minimum of three years experience with Website / Web application development.

* Experience with Unix systems administration, extending and customizing open-source and commercial software, working with existing code libraries, GUI development, creating client/server applications, relational database management systems, and designing and implementing reliable & scalable systems.

* Strong Java and PHP programming skills.

Preferred Experience:

* Good writing skills and experience with interface design.

* Knowledge and skills relating to: Windows, Linux/UNIX, Mac OS X; PHP and Java programming; defining project requirements; working with technical and non-technical staff and users; setting appropriate project schedules; management of web and database server software, and programming robust, supportable software with comprehensive, usable documentation.

This is a 12-month, 100%-time academic professional position with regular University benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience. Starting date is as soon as possible after the closing date. This position may become regular at a later date.
