Position: Arabic & Islamic Studies Subject Specialist

 

Available: Immediately with the expectation that the successful
candidate will be in place by early summer 2008

 

Ohio State University Libraries seeks an individual with an advanced
degree in Arabic, Islamic or Middle East Studies and who has an
excellent knowledge of the Arabic language.  The successful candidate
will provide subject expertise for the Libraries and teach at least two
courses (graduate and undergraduate) per year in the department of Near
Eastern Languages and Cultures.  The successful candidate must also hold
an MLS (or equivalent) accredited by the American Library Association or
be willing to obtain an MLS within two years of appointment as a
condition of consideration for tenure and promotion.   

 

Responsibilities:  Works independently, under the general guidance of
the Assistant Director for Collections, Instruction, and Public Services
(CIPS), with the CIPS Coordinators (for Circulation, Collections,
Instruction, Interlibrary Services/Document Delivery, Outreach, and
Reference and Research) and in cooperation with the Persian & Turkish
Subject Specialist, to determine needs, establish priorities, support
services and programs, and participate in supervision and evaluation of
staff.  (0.75 FTE University Libraries; 0.25 Department of Near Eastern
Languages and Cultures) 

 

The subject specialist will be expected to know or to be prepared to
learn the structures and operations related to:

*	developing and preserving the OSUL collections relating to
Arabic language, literature and culture, Islam, and history of the
Middle East and North Africa since the rise of Islam, in all formats; 
*	coordinating and cooperating with other subject specialists, in
particular the Persian & Turkish Subject Specialist, to ensure
collection and service coverage; providing traditional and electronic
reference and research services to patrons;
*	building partnerships and creating shared practices that connect
the University's learning environment and research knowledge with the
needs; and marketing programs in such areas as access and document
delivery, copyright and licensing, emerging technologies, assessment,
and institutional repositories;  
*	building partnerships and creating shared practices that connect
the University's learning environment and research knowledge with the
constitute needs;
*	publishing scholarly works and being active professionally
through conference attendance and participation in professional
organizations.  

 

Under the general guidance of and in cooperation with those noted above
and, in

particular, with the Persian & Turkish Subject Specialist, the Arabic &
Islamic

Studies subject specialist administers the development of the collection
in all formats.

This responsibility includes:

*	building on existing strengths and forging new directions for
collection development.  
*	providing and seeking other opportunities for traditional and
electronic reference and research services to patrons 
*	building skills and bibliographic tools both inside and outside
the classroom, as requested by faculty 
*	seeking and proposing other classroom teaching opportunities;
including opportunities to advance student and faculty engagement using
innovative methods
*	integrating information technologies, multimedia and knowledge
resources into

course management systems and curricula; 

*	seeking opportunities for outreach and engagement external to
the University, writes grants, and develops programs to market the
Libraries' resources and services.

 

Qualifications:  Required Ph.D. or advanced degree in Arabic, Islamic or
Middle East Studies, ABD candidates may apply.  Fluent in spoken Arabic
and mastery of classical Arabic.  Mastery of English in order to teach.
MLS (or equivalent) accredited by the American Library Association; or
willingness to obtain an MLS within two years of appointment as a
condition of consideration for tenure and promotion.   

Desired:  Reading and/or spoken ability in another Middle East language;
knowledge of the teaching and research needs of faculty; experience
teaching; demonstrated enthusiasm for outreach, flexibility, and
interest in expanding responsibilities for developing and delivering
user-centered services and programs; demonstrated interest in the
applying new and emerging information technologies and methods;
excellent communication and presentation skills; strong service
orientation and interpersonal skills; willingness to partner with
teaching and research faculty in interdisciplinary initiatives;
supervisory experience.    

Salary and rank: May be an entry level position. $41,000 minimum;
faculty rank and salary dependent upon experience and qualifications.
Appointment of a candidate without an earned MLS will be at the
Instructor level.
