Student Library Assistant - Digitization

Special Collections Library

The Special Collections Library, located in Hoskins Library, seeks
qualified
students to assist in the digitization of selected items from our
collection
of historic materials.

Hours: 10-15 hours per week; schedule is negotiable within our business
hours (9:00-5:30, Monday-Friday).

Required Qualifications:

    * UT student (undergraduate or graduate) in liberal arts or
information
science
    * Strong attention to detail
    * Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
    * Comfortable working with computers and learning new software
programs
    * Must be able to work independently
    * Punctual and reliable

Preferred:

    * Previous library work experience
    * Prior experience using a flatbed scanner
    * Interest in Tennessee history, manuscripts, or librarianship
    * Familiarity with EAD, MODS, TEI, or other forms of metadata
    * Prior experience handling rare and fragile materials
    * Ability to read 19 th century handwriting.

Duties/Responsibilities:

    * Under limited supervision, scan selected Special Collections
materials, including letters, diaries, photographs, and other historic
items
    * Create full-text transcription of the item being handled using a
TEI
template
    * Edit EAD-encoded finding aids to indicate materials scanned
    * Other duties as assigned
