ANNOUNCEMENT OF FACULTY VACANCY
Position:  Special Collections and Rare Anglo-American Literature
Cataloger
Available:  January 2, 2008
Description/Environment
Brigham Young University (BYU), a privately owned and operated university
of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located in Provo,
Utah, invites application for a permanent continuing faculty status (CFS)
track position in the Technical Services Division of the Harold B. Lee
Library.  The library is seeking a dynamic individual who can perform well
in a rapidly changing environment.  The mission of the Special Collections
and Rare Anglo-American Literature Cataloger is to provide accurate and
prompt bibliographic records for Special collections materials in
Anglo-American literature, and rare materials in the English language in
all formats, including digital, audio-visual, and serial.

Responsibilities:
 
·Perform original descriptive cataloging, subject cataloging, and
classification of books and other materials in the English language for
Special Collections as well as other assigned subject areas outside of
Special Collections as needed by the Library.       
·Keep abreast of changes in cataloging rules and standards, Library
of Congress rule interpretations, and metadata standards and practices.    

·Perform name authority work for personal names, corporate names,
and series names. Contributes to NACO/LC Authority File through the
NACO program.     
·Perform subject authority work as needed through the SACO program.
    
·Contribute most cataloging to national shared-cataloging programs
through the BIBCO program.     
·Subject specialist in Anglo-American literature. Work with other
subject specialists in the library as needed in determining levels of
cataloging, subject analysis, classification, and to solve other inter-and
intra-departmental problems.      
·Participate in library-wide faculty assignments such as teaching,
liaison work, etc., as requested. 
·Serve on Library and/or University committees.
·Contribute to state, regional, and national committees and
participate in research, publication, and other professional and scholarly
activities as required by the Library Faculty Rank Advancement document.  
Qualifications:
·MLS from an ALA-accredited institution is required.  However,
applicants who have related education or work experience and who are
committed to completing the MLS within a specified period of time may be
considered.
·Graduate degree in English literature or related field such as
humanities preferred.
·In-depth knowledge of the English-language literatures and the
Anglo-American world of the19th-21st centuries.
·Knowledge and skills in applying cataloging standards, including
AACR2, DCRM(B), MARC21, LCSH, LC Subject Cataloging Manual, LC
Classification (all schedules), Dewey Decimal Classification (all
subjects).
·Knowledge and experience with cataloging into systems and
databases (SIRSI and OCLC systems preferred).
·Knowledge and skills using metadata standards and applications.
·Reading knowledge of foreign languages, preferably French,
Italian, or another European language.
·Knowledge and skills dealing with the use of national
bibliographies, national biographies, national encyclopedias, histories of
national literature, and other reference materials in the subject area.
·Knowledge of the history of books and printing.
·Supervisory and managerial skills.
·Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work
collaboratively with colleagues, faculty, students, and the general
public.
·Flexibility in adapting to changing departmental and
organizational priorities and to ever-changing technological environments.
Salary and Benefits:
This is a permanent CFS track with generous insurance and retirement
benefits.  Salary is commensurate with experience and
academic/professional qualifications.  This is a twelve-month
appointment with twenty-two days annual leave and additional professional
development time available.
