LIBRARY DIRECTOR—APPALACHIAN COLLEGE ASSOCIATION

Appalachian College Association (ACA)—a  consortium of 36 private liberal 
arts colleges in Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West 
Virginia—seeks  candidates for the endowed position of Director of the 
Bowen Central Library of Appalachia (BCLA).  BCLA—a virtual library 
providing access to electronic resources and collaborative services—
currently manages and coordinates a core collection and a distributed 
collection of electronic resources subscriptions to provide all ACA 
students, faculty and staff with the very best library information 
resources and develops and provides professional staff development 
opportunities for ACA member libraries. New initiatives include 
participating in a strategic planning process to align the BCLA mission and 
goals with the ACA and the Digital Library of Appalachia project. The 
Digital Library of Appalachia, http://www.aca-dla.org/ is a homegrown 
product of items, files, etc. and is a small subset of what the BCLA offers 
in digital form. 

ACA seeks a Library Director who has proven interpersonal and collaborative 
skills; the ability to work diplomatically with multiple constituencies 
understanding the balance between the centralized ACA projects and the 
local autonomy of each member; successful experience in strategic planning; 
and experience in general management including fiscal management, 
technology, and contract negotiations with vendors. 

This position works closely with member Presidents, Deans, Library 
Directors and Library staff and reports to the Vice President for Academic 
Programs at the Appalachian College Association. The BCLA Director must be 
willing to work out of the ACA offices in Berea, KY, and commit to a 
significant amount of time to travel to member libraries and relevant 
meetings and conferences.  

Minimum qualifications: a Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA 
accredited school; eight to 10 years of progressively responsible academic 
library and/or consortial experience with a minimum of four years in a 
senior administrative position; ability to work with multiple 
constituencies collaboratively; excellent communication skills—both written 
and oral; experience in strategic planning and organizational development; 
a high level of energy and enthusiasm; and sound management skills in the 
areas of fiscal management and electronic resources.

Salary and benefits: $70,000-$80,000 depending upon qualifications; and a 
competitive benefits package.
