DEANTHE OHIO UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES
Ohio University seeks applications and nominations for the position of
Dean of the University Libraries. The dean is the chief administrative and
academic offi cer of the University Libraries and reports directly to the
executive vice president and provost. The Dean is expected to be an active
academic leader and to play a vital role in fulfi lling the University's
mission in teaching, research, and public service.Ohio University is
classifi ed as an RU/H (Research University/high research activity)
institution by the Carnegie Foundation. With a main campus in Athens and
fi ve regional campuses, the University has a total of 1092 full-time
faculty, nearly 19,000 students in Athens, and well over 6,000 regional
campus students. The Libraries of Ohio University play an important role
in maintaining its well-regarded academic programs and contribute signifi
cantly to the diverse, dynamic, and collegial atmosphere that is a
hallmark of the institution.The Ohio University Libraries system is a
member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Center for Research
Libraries and OhioLINK. The Libraries have an innovative, service-oriented
staff of 109 full-time equivalent employees and an annual budget of $13
million. A recently completed strategic plan outlines the Libraries'
initiatives in support of Vision Ohio, the University's academic plan.
Collections include more than 2.6 million volumes and 22,000 current
serials; digital resources account for approximately 50% of annual
acquisitions expenditures. The Libraries' outstanding Southeast Asia
Collection, part of the Hwa-Wei Lee Center for International Collections,
is a national depository for Malaysia. Library facilities include Vernon
R. Alden Library, the Music/Dance Library, and the Southeast Ohio Regional
Library Depository in Athens, as well as libraries on each of the regional
campuses. Construction of the Faculty Commons, a complement to the highly
successful Learning Commons, has begun as the fi rst step of a planned
multi-year renovation of Alden Library.Candidates for Dean of the
University Libraries must have signifi cant and progressive library
administrative experience and management skills, an understanding of the
operations and goals of a major research university, and preferably,
experience with a multi-campus library system. Their experience should
demonstrate a strong commitment to the educational and service missions of
libraries, and to an active staff development program. Candidates should
also have a strong record of demonstrated success in developing and/or
implementing technological innovation and in securing external funds
through grants and/or private fund-raising. Communication and
interpersonal skills are a major requirement for this position, as the
dean must be a team leader and consensus builder, responsive to a wide
range of constituencies, and able to establish partnerships with other
units, both on the various university campuses and external to the
university. Candidates must also possess the ability to foster a collegial
working environment in the Libraries and be a catalyst for strengthening
staff diversity. A Master's of Library Science or its equivalent from an
accredited program is required, with an advanced degree in an academic
discipline strongly preferred.Salary is competitive and commensurate with
qualifi cations. The position is available upon completion of the search,
