POSITION:

Executive Director

JOB

DESCRIPTION:

Under the supervision of the Discover Life in America (DLIA) Board Chairperson, the Director

plans, coordinates, and conducts the programs and activities related to the All Taxa

Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI).

Administrative Functions: Supervise DLIA employees, contractors, and volunteers; coordinate

fund-raising efforts and develop grant proposals related to the activities of DLIA; handle the

day-to-day financial matters of DLIA and assist the DLIA finance committee in developing the

annual budget; participate in forward planning in cooperation with the DLIA Board.

Scientific Functions: Administer the DLIA Grant Program; oversee communications about

ATBI research findings to scientists, educators, students, and the public; coordinate scientific

endeavors of DLIA such as bio-blitzes, trail surveys, special requests from researchers, and

other ATBI-related efforts; support research in the Park by facilitating housing, field, lab, and

technical support.

Education and Outreach Functions: Manage the volunteer program by recruiting, training, and

supervising "citizen scientists" in the ATBI; cultivate and maintain "partners" relationships

with Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Friends of the Smokies, Great Smoky Mountains

Association, Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont, Parks as Classrooms, and like

organizations; actively maintain contact with regional media to promote DLIA activities;

supervise the content of DLIA printed and electronic communications; work with the DLIA

Education Committee to link ATBI activities with education partners; coordinate the

DLIA/ATBI Annual Conference; present public outreach programs, and help develop teaching

materials, exhibits and other educational projects related to the ATBI; produce a periodic

newsletter and write articles for other publications concerning Discover Life in America.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum of a B.S. or B.A. degree with a combination of coursework and experience in natural

sciences, education, resource management, program planning, communications, research, and

demonstrated management capacity. At least 5 years experience with non-profit organizations

and parks is desirable. Good writing skills with strong initiative to develop grant proposals is

highly desirable. A positive outlook, flexibility, and a friendly personality are pluses.

SALARY:

Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
