Position: Mary P. Key Diversity Residency
Available: Immediately
This two-year residency program for a recent library school graduate is designed to help bridge academic training to practical experience and to increase diversity from underrepresented groups for academic librarianship and for The Ohio State University Libraries (OSUL). The program is designed to provide professional development in a nurturing, yet productive real world environment. This two-year residency focuses on monographs. Under the supervision of the Head of the Monographs Department, the Resident will develop skills in system administration, all aspects of monograph acquisitions and processing, fund management and auditing requirements, liaison work with vendors, publishers, and subject selectors, internal instruction and training, supervisory skills, report writing, and communication with groups served by the Monographs Department. The Resident will also participate in reviewing and streamlining workflows in the Monographs Dept.
The Resident will be introduced to other units in University Libraries to facilitate an overview of a large research library. The Mary P. Key Resident is also expected to serve on committees, including service as an ex officio member on the OSUL Diversity Committee and the Collections Advisory Council.
Mentoring: The Head of Monographs will serve as a mentor. The Resident will periodically be expected to meet with the Assistant Director for Administrative Services, Assistant Director for Technical Services and Information Technology, and the Director of Libraries. Peer mentoring is also an available option.
Professional
Development: The Libraries will provide financial support to participate in a variety of professional conferences and meetings as well as programs such as the Minnesota Institute for Early Career Librarians from Traditionally Underrepresented Groups and the ALCTS Business of Acquisitions online course.
As a Visiting Faculty (non-tenure track) member, the Resident will be highly encouraged to focus on an area of interest to engage in professional research and publication. The Resident will provide a Faculty Annual Report (FAE) and periodic reports to the Diversity Committee to track progress based on established objectives.
Qualifications: Required: Applicants should have recently completed requirements for a Masters degree from an ALA-
accredited program, no later than August 2007; mastery of English and demonstrated communication skills and the ability to articulate abstract concepts effectively; experience or interest in acquisitions and the book trade; experience or interest in e-books and provision of materials in an online environment; the ability to work independently and collaboratively with colleagues in a service-oriented, diverse environment; an interest in professional development and research, including participation in professional organizations; be self-directed, analytical, detail-oriented, results-oriented, creative, flexible, and adaptable to change in a high-production environment. Desired: Previous experience working with money; experience in customer service, working with the public, or in a position requiring problem-resolution; familiarity with other languages.
Salary and rank: $41,000 minimum; Visiting Faculty (non-tenure track)
