TITLE: Manager of the Florida Digital Archive 

DEPARTMENT: Florida Center for Library Automation 

LOCATION: Gainesville, FL 

REPORTS TO: Assistant Director for Digital Library Services 

SALARY: Actual salary commensurate with qualifications and experience, 
minimum $50,000. 

JOB SUMMARY: The Florida Digital Archive (FDA) aims to provide 
cost-effective, long-term preservation repository services for digital 
materials submitted by the libraries of Florida's public university 
system and other partners. The FDA guarantees that all archived files 
remain available, unaltered, and readable from media. For  those 
materials designated to receive full preservation treatment, the  FDA 
will maintain a usable version using the best format migration tools 
available. The FDA is an initiative of the Digital Library Services 
Group within the Florida Center for Library Automation, and it relies 
upon a locally-developed software application called DAITSS, which was 
released as open source software in 2007. For more information about the

The FDA Manager will be responsible for day-to-day production operations

of the FDA, which include processing Ingest, Dissemination, Withdrawal 
and Reporting requests. The Manager is responsible for establishing and 
maintaining relationships with FDA affiliates (customers), for providing

instruction and documentation in the use of the FDA, and for sustaining 
and improving the quality of services provided. The Manager will take a 
lead role in planning and directing the future administrative and 
operational direction of the FDA, and in achieving certification as a 
trustworthy digital repository. 

The Florida Center for Library Automation (FCLA) provides information 
technology services to the libraries of the eleven  public universities 
of Florida.  FCLA is located in Gainesville and administered by the 
University of Florida.  FCLA develops and/or manages applications to 
support library staff functions and patron access to library resources; 
coordinates collaborative activities such as consortial purchasing; and 
provides software and services to help libraries create, manage and 
preserve digital content.   FCLA's staff of 55 includes 20 librarians, 
18 programmers and 7 Unix systems administrators.  For more information

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

1. Establish relationships with existing and prospective FDA affiliates,

to communicate FDA policies and procedures, help affiliates use archive 
services successfully, and solicit their feedback, suggestions and 
concerns. 

2. Oversee the daily production operations of the FDA. Supervise the 
operations technician(s) running ingest processing and other FDA
functions. 

3. Work on the process of repository certification, including (but not 
limited to) the development of a comprehensive risk register and related

contingency planning. 

4. Work with the archive programming team to implement new releases of 
the DAITSS software used by the repository, to report and resolve 
software problems, and to communicate requirements and enhancement 
requests. 

5. Pursue formal collaborations with other preservation repositories for

interoperability and succession planning. 

6. Keep end-user documentation current, write documentation for new 
features, and prepare training and promotional materials. 

7. Help develop improved reporting capabilities. Provide current and 
historical statistical information for internal and external purposes. 

8. Promote the FDA within the public university system and more broadly,

publicize FDA activities in national and international forums. 

9. Work with other FCLA administrators in planning and developing new 
FDA functions and services. 

10. Related duties as required. 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  Masters degree in library and/or information 
science from an ALA-accredited program; excellent oral and written 
communications skills in English; good interpersonal skills; good 
analytic and problem-solving skills. Two years or more professional 
experience with an academic library, university archive, library systems

vendor or similar organization. Demonstrated interest in and familiarity

with the field of digital preservation. Willingness to travel. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Prior supervisory experience. Prior 
experience in a customer service-oriented position. Experience with 
automated library systems. Good public speaking skills.
