Graduate Research Assistantship

The Institute for a Secure and Sustainable Environment (ISSE), a
research center at the University of Tennessee, has an open Graduate
Research Assistantship for supporting projects that help build the
National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII). The NBII is a
consortium of public and private partners, coordinated by the U.S.
Geological Survey, that provide high quality data and tools for
promoting biological conservation and managing our national biological
resources.

The Graduate Research Assistant will focus on developing and improving
formal metadata (FGDC, Dublin Core) that describe both source datasets
and web services that provide access to data. Responsibilities will
include carrying out research to document legacy datasets, providing
enhancements to existing metadata, and reviewing and quality checking
metadata. This position is an excellent opportunity for an Information
Sciences student to gain hands-on experience working with metadata that
enables regional and national information systems for promoting
biodiversity and conservation. The Graduate Research Assistantship may
also provide an opportunity to develop additional research projects with
Information Science faculty. This position is for the summer term 2007,
but could be continued on through the 07-08 academic year. Exceptional
undergraduate students may be considered.

Requirements include experience or interest in information sciences and
metadata, creativity and problem solving skills, and attention to
detail. Additional opportunities exist for a candidate with skill,
experience, or interest in programming and scripting to develop tools
for working with metadata.
